Stuck oil filter....

So I went and picked up some oil and an oil filter yesterday, did an oil change right when I got home drained it, and then realized I couldn't get the filter off for the life of me. The truck was hot so I figured that's why, but I needed it right away so I dumped some fresh oil in and dove it. I figured I'd get the filter off when I can let it cool.

How much oil you figure is going to drain out with out draining the oil first? If any? I figured it will all settle in the pan.

You won't lose much oil at all. Think about where the oil sits on the dipstick when it's in the tube. That's the level your engine oil sits at when the motor isn't running.

The best way to remove a tough filter is to drive a long screwdriver all the way thru it and then twist it off.
 
^^^exactly what he said...or u could try those rubber pad things that ppl use to open jars, that also works well for grip
 
I use a filter strap wrench. Owned it for at least 20 years now. Worked on everything but the trans filter on my brothers satty.

Driving a long thick screwdriver didn't do it. But the screwdriver AND the strap wrench did.
 
Because the oil filter on my 3.4 engine is not easy to access, I decided to use K&N oil filters. They come with a 1" simulated bolt head on the top. Yes, they do cost more.

Yeah, I have used those on other cars. Sounds like a good investment.

I just went out and it's still not coming off. I'm going to wait tell first thing in the morning to get it, but it doesn't get to cold in northern FL. If that doesn't work I'll have to wait tell Wednesday that's the next time I can be with out my 4runner.

When you drive a screwdriver in are you going from the side or through the top of the filter?

Through one side and out the other.

Because you can go thru the wheel well, i use a cup type filter wrench with a ratchet and a long extension. Once I break it loose, I'll slip a baggie over the filter and catch the oil draining out. Continue to unscrew the filter until it drops into the baggie. Done right, there's no mess to clean up.

Yeah I'm going to pick one of these up.
 
I use the oil filter strap wrench on tough filters as well, the bar dents in, and then it really grabs well.

Just be sure you get one that fits the filter you want to remove and that it also fits the one you want to install (or get two). They are not all the same even for filters that work on the same engine. For example, the Toyota filters and the NAPA/Wix filters for the 3.4 V6 use a different size cup wrench.

I use the same technique as Dr. Coffee (always Wix in my case). Definitely an easy way to do it.

Easy and smart, kudos, from now on I`ll be using your method.

the filter is also already full at that point.

just make sure to top it off after changing the filter.
it will hold more than you think it should be able to.
