I use this one for many years now, fits every filter I tried unlike single sized suggested above. I was able to remove most stabborn filter with it.

Am I the only one who does oil changes by hand? I just wear fresh nitrile gloves, make sure the filter is dry, and grip the thing off. You guys need to eat your Wheaties

I put it on hand tight so that I can just unscrew it by hand the next time.

The down side to this style is you cannot tighten an oil filter with it. Not every filter can be reached with by your hand where you can tighten it enough. So I spin it until it touches the mating surface, then mark it at 3 o clock. Then tighten it 3/4 turn more. The mark should be at 12 o clock when you are done.
The strap wrench is good for when the cups dont fit. But it can be a PITA to get it in place without it unraveling.

See this is where being a cheap bastard comes in handy. If the cup is just a little too big, i put a paper towel on the oil filter and then put the cup on. It fills the gap and lets you grip the filter.

Correct, you can`t tighten filter using this stile ( without denting filter body that is) but you never suppose to tighten filter with a wrench, hand tight only.
Every manual I read stated 1/3 of a turn after filter touches with exception of some motorcycles with crazy oil pressures.

Are you sure about that? (I don't mean this in an offensive way, lol) I recall most automotive filters stating at least 2/3-3/4 turn after it touches...

I just checked my bosch filter, it says 3/4-1 turn.
and yes, as said above, you aren't supposed to use a tool to install the filter. hand tight only.
^ works - if it is really stubborn a couple wraps of electrical tape around the filter helps.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm forced to do this as a new member...
I have a Hilux Surf (Japanese 4Runner) with the 2.7 engine (3RZ-FE) and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the size (i.e. diameter and number of flats) of the required oil filter wrench to swap the oil filters on my engine (P/N 90915-20001).

THIS is the best method out there if you cannot get it off by hand. Tried and true works every time. Oil filter wrenches are for the weak :baby:

Haha! I used to have one of those useless rubber strap wrenches. I don't think it ever worked. On my diesel Hilux, where you can just reach into the engine bay and pull the filter easily, I can normally get the filter off, though on a few occasions I've done the screwdriver trick. You just need to be sure not to foul on the union!
However, my Surf (4Runner) is a new vehicle to me. The oil filter is much smaller and very inconveniently located (though nothing compared to the fuel filter... wtf!?) and has most likely been fitted by an idiot. Idiots like over-tightening things and there is now way this baby is coming off by hand. I've even taken the whole oil filter bracket off (I'm stripping the engine down!) and nothing. I've never seen how far the union protrudes, so I'm going to be careful and buy a proper wrench.

When I change my oil, I make sure I have on a leather belt. Just make a loop thru the buckle, fit it over the filter and pull in the direction that the filter unthreads. Has always worked for me. I've seen the screwdriver trick rip the end of a really tight filter, making it even harder to remove. Good Luck!
