Stupid Keyless remotes !!!

Guys please have mercy on a new owner --- I bought a used 2002 sr5 4runner and I did not get door remotes. I read & researched and looked -- bought the one I thought I needed & it didn't work. Bought the other FCC # for my year -- it doesn't work either. Then I notice a little red LED sticking out of the dash to the left of the steering column and I think "OK , aftermarket system" - except after looking around I cannot find any kind of control box for it.
Has anyone run across this before and any tips of where & what to look for ??

PS. Looks like I may have some remotes for sale !!

Thanks

do you have a picture of this led?

I've gone thru the programming steps and the locks cycle after the last step -- But nothing happens when I do the steps with the remote "push both lock and unlock then lock" -- nothing at all. The locks cycle by themselves after I do all the steps and turn the key on & off . I thought maybe an aftermarket system of some type was messing me up , but I don't know.
Thanks

No I don't -- I can get one this evening. It is a pretty generic looking LED - I've never seen it light up -- I put a DEI remote start on a Grand Cherokee years back and it had a LED just like this one and it blinked when the alarm was armed. I doubt it is factory - it is mounted in the center of one of the little switch filler panels on the left side of the dash -

It's most likely that the LED is for an aftermarket system. Otherwise there were 2 types of alarms available for the 3rd gen:

A) The RS3000/RS3200 systems were dealer-installed options with the 2-button remotes, and they had a red LED on the dash with the word "security" above or below it (don't remember which). There is a black box under the driver seat (may be under the carpet) for these systems, most of the time.

B) The factory-installed systems would have the the 3-button remote (lock/unlock/rear window) and the word "security" above your HVAC controls next to a red LED (but the LED isn't visible when off).

I guess the third option is that you have an aftermarket system - and the "brain" could be just about anywhere...most likely under the dash. Take off the left kick panel and look for wires spliced into the harnesses near the fuse box. Likewise, remove the knee panel below the steering wheel and look for splices near the ignition.

But wait - you said the locks cycle after the last step? Well, sounds to me like you have the factory-installed system, and your remote isn't the proper one, or it needs a new battery!

Tell ya what I have, which came with my 2002 sport edition is a Valet 561R Remote Start set up.

Replaces the standard keyless remote dohicky and it is FREAKING AWESOME.

I can remote start my car from my bedroom or about anywhere in my house and my car is like 200' away out in the parking lot.
I can leave the defroster or AC or whatever on when I exit the vehicle the night before. Remote start it while I have my coffee in the morning and the engine is warmed up and the inside is either warm & defrosted or nice and cool depending on time of year when I get to the truck.

All I need to do then is stick the key in the ignition and turn to the "on" position and I am good to go.
Can also hop out of the truck if I just need to go into a store really quick and can leave the engine and AC running and take the keys with me and lock it up.

Love the remote start.

I think they are under $100 and is MUCH better than just a keyless remote.

02 Sport: HYQ1512Y

You have to do the program thing at a nice quick pace... took me a couple tries, but what finaly worked for me was I did it faster than the previous attempt.

After all the checking and trying to reprogram -- I replaced a bad battery and the HYQ1512Y works !! So many guys here said their similar model 4runner used that # remote I went back and triple checked stuff -- I replaced the battery when I got the stupid thing but evidently it was dead when I put it in. Tried another one today and it fixed it !
Thanks for all the input and advice -- Next -- Tundra brakes !
