Stupid question alert

I'm looking for a 4th gen and so many people don't list whether their truck is 2WD or 4WD. How can I tell from the pics if it is 4WD so I don't have to email them?

Semi-related side note: it's amazing how much lower the percentage of 4th gens are 4WD compared to 3rd gens. Sure makes the search tougher, especially here in FL.

The only place that shows it is on the drive and passenger door. Next to the sr5, sport, or limited emblem it will have a 4wd emblem.

Correct me if I'm wrong but some are still 4WD even though there is no emblem on the outside. With 3rd gens it's easy, it either has the shifter or it doesn't :/

If I'm not mistaken then the 4th gen runners if equipped with 4WD will have the 4WD badge on the outside of the passenger and driver side door. But sometimes people take off the badges. Like mine the rear Toyota and 4Runner badge was not there when I purchased it, either it got stolen or owner took it off. Or if you see the interior pictures then next to the fan control button the 4WD selector knob is there. If it doesn't have one then it's a 2WD.
Hope this helps.

Take a pic of the interior just below the rear window button
Exactly this..

I believe that the limited editions are all wheel drive. I'd highly suggest finding one with XREAS suspension. You can talk them down a bunch, plus it's easy to uninstall and replace with shocks

Not all limiteds are AWD, but all Limiteds equipped with the V8 are AWD. And I'm pretty sure all V8 4unners 06-09 were AWD. Not sure about the years before that

My Captain (who was a Mustang) in the USMC always said "The only dumb/stupid question is the ne that you do not ask".

The Limiteds are full time all wheel drive?
And everything I've read says to stay away from XREAS suspension because it's difficult to work with...

Ah. Thx. The varied options between '03 to '09 is a little overwhelming.

XREAS suspension is good from the point of view of the buyer. Buying power, also called negotiating power, is extremely difficult to find with a low miles, clean 4 runner. XREAS costs a little over a thousand bucks to service at the dealership. So you may be able to negotiate a few hundred bucks unless they wanna have it serviced.

Then, look up the video on YouTube by Low range off-road on replacing the XREAS suspension with shocks.

If their pictures show any detail of the front end look for cv boots or shafts, or look for a xfer case crossmember if it can be spotted

5ths aren't badged and that's what I look for.........cuz mine doesn't have the crossmember:(

All V8 4wd models are AWD/full time 4wd. Not selectable. Simple as that.
They did make the V8 with 2wd.

Xreas was an option only for Limiteds and Sport models.

I always thought the 4wd badging on the 4Runner was a little shortsighted, particularly on a limited. Someone asked me once "what does limited 4wd mean? Don't you have it or you don't?"

Also, at least around here, some people purposely try to hide the 4wd selector knob in their pics, they know that 2wd makes it worth a lot less. When I was looking I ran across several that were listed as 4wd but didn't show the 4wd selectors knob, so I'd ask for a picture of that area and that's when they had to fess up and admit theirs was 2wd

Oh ok thanks for clearing that up. I'm not I'd know XREAS suspension if I saw it though.
