stupid question thread

Toyota has pledged their commitment to BOF SUVs and trucks, they have also taken the FJ Cruiser behind the barn and shot it (if you want to debate that, that's for another discussion). The 4Runner is currently alive and well, although the 2014s are undergoing a freakish styling mutation, but it's not really what you'd call... inexpensive.

The Wrangler, Xterra, FJ Cruiser have all been "cheap" trail vehicles. Decent examples of each can be bought for less than 300 Benjamins, all with manual transmissions and spartan equipment groups.

With Toyota's ongoing commitment to BOF SUVs, are we going to see a cheap BOF trail SUV below the 4Runner that isn't either a Taco with a topper on it or a clown shoes FJ Cruiser? 25-30 grand price point, 4x4, V6, smaller, narrower, lighter, less bloated? The current 5th gen is the same size as an FJ60.

There's nothing particularly wrong with the 4Runner, but with the FJ dead I feel that Toyota want to bloat it up with luxury uselessness and off road trickery buttons that will never be pushed. We already have one bloated BOF SUV, the Land Cruiser and one mommy hauler, the Seqoia (does anyone even buy those things?).

I agree with Landcruisers assessment. Toyota's commitment to BOF is commendable, especially since they're the last man standing(don't cave). However, the tech heavy SUVs they're marketing are out of reach for a lot of buyers, particularly the younger, entry-level ones. Toyota would be wise to market an affordable, basic BOF small SUV, sized somewhere between a Wrangler and a Samurai and released under the Scion mark. Price it in the $20K range and sell as many as they can build. It would also have huge appeal to emerging 3rd world markets, as well as China. I have discussed this topic with my sons(21 and 19) who would jump at something like this. What are ur thoughts younger members?

At some point off road and luxury got lumped together, and whether it's SUVs or even pickups, it's really hard to get an off road performance vehicle that doesn't have unnecessary luxury features and electrical gadgets.

I'm seriously wondering why they can't just throw a wagon SUV shell on a base model 4x4 Tacoma like they do with the Fortuner.

Why would I want to rag on the Wrangler?

My only beef with it is that the abandoned the I6 and have started to use chrome plastic crap interior bits from the Chrysler minivan parts bin.

I'm still shocked that in our current regulatory climate Jeep can build a bathtub body, open top, BOF SFA truck...
