Stupid tire question

when switching from 265/65/17 to 265/70/17 what does the increase form 65 to 70 mean. What will it visually do to the tire if anything.

the middle number is the sidewall height, so it will make the tire fill the wheel well better. the first number is the width, and the last number is your rim size. going from a 65 to a 70 will be noticable to you. it will look a lot better in my opinion!

My understanding is that the 265 refers to the width of the tire in milimeters. The 65 or 70 number represents the "aspect ratio", which means that the tire's sidewall height is 65% or 70% of the tire's width. The 17 refers to the wheel size diameter in inches.

Therefore, a 265/65/17 tire won't be as "tall" as a 265/70/17 tire because the aspect ratio, or sidewall height, is less (65% of 265 as opposed to 70% of 265).

A 265/70/17 will be a little taller, thereby filling up the wheel well a little more and providing a marginal amount of additional "lift".

In a nutshell, 65 --> 70, taller sidewall of the tire. Larger diameter overall too. You will get a slight lift too without using an actual lift kit.

265 - width of tire
65 - height of sidewall in relation to width
R17 - size of rim it can accomodate
