I have a 2003 4runner, JBL system with RSD, the subwoofer located in the back side pannel blew and needs to be replaces. I do not want to go through the expense of replacing the whole unit like toyota recommends which includes the box, amp and sub $450. I would prefer to just replace the speaker, but i need the proper specs to do so. I can't find any information on the speakers, does anyone know what the impedence for the sub is. Thanks the help.

If you want to replace the speaker only. Then you should know how to remove/unscrew it from the box or where ever it is now. So remove the suspected speaker fr the enclosure
In that way you can:
1. Read the Label about its impedance, and wattage
2. Inspect for loose or detached connections.
3. I'll disconnect the speaker from the subwoofer enclosure and confirm if defective by connecting a house speaker like surround or stereo cabinet speakers then turn it on if audio is heard...before I buy a replacement. because sometimes its the amp thats faulty.:snacker:

The sub is dual voice coil @2 ohms impedance each coil.
Aye.. when i took it apart the cone was detached form the speaker but still got sound out of it just nothing much. Was no lable on the back of it so couldnt use that. I want to find some after market sub but didnt want to put in something that would cause the amp problems.
Thanks.. would it be safet to attach a sub with 4 ohms or would that cause problems do you think ?

4 ohm coils would not tax the amp as much but the output level would be lower.
Path, in addition to a 2 ohm DVC being your best match, the replacement driver should also be happy in a .6 ft^3 sealed enclosure. Even a dual 2 ohm driver doesn't guarantee the same output as stock since the cone/voice coil mass, magnet strength, etc. go into determining the overall sensitivity of the speaker. You're limited to 4", maybe 4.25" on the mounting depth...most 8" aftermarket drivers seem to be deeper.
Watch eBay...from time to time, people who replace the entire JBL system, put the used drivers up for sale. Might even help to place a wanted ad in the classified here and at other Toyota forums.
Parts-Express sells surround kits so you can repair yourself. Sounds like that's all you really need to get yours working again.

You can just drop in a sub, but sound isn't gonna be great. I swapped in a 8" JL sub and added an amp, love the new setup. It's SO much better than stock.
