successful tire and gear conbos?

I an in the market for a 4runner.
A few years ago I had a Tacoma. I lifted it and put 33" tires on it. Just to tow my atv up north was a chore with whatever stock ratio it had.
Now I want to get a 4runner and I want to lift it. In anyones actual lift experiences what tire combinations work with what gear ratios. I am mostly trying to find out what I can get away with sticking with stock gears, and not losing too much power for towing light loads over longer distances.
Also any input on how different size tires affect gas mileage with stock gears would be interesting. Remember larger tires affect the odometer reading.

I should be pulling the trigger on a 4runner soon, and I would like to have a plan whether or not I have to regear. No low speed offroading for me. I just need to be able to get throught he snow, and through some mud to my huntin spots. I also have to travel 2-300 miles hunting fishing and camping.

Stock gears put you at a 265 maybe a 285 depending on year and options. For towing id stick with 265's and a very mild lift.

After rereading this you should get a 99 with the tall coils and e locker. That set up comes from the factory with a one inch lift and the lowest gearing available. Throw a small spacer lift on it and some beefy 265's for fire service roads and to get you to a place to drop the atv you shouldn't need more as well as mgp's being pretty close to stock and lots of road driving i see that as the best option .
