Suggested tire size for 96 SR5, thanks.

Hi, currently I have a 96 SR5 with 15 inch rims. I just got a hold of some stock 16in alloy 2004 tacoma rims and looking to put some BFG A/T KO tires on em To me it looks like I have two choices:

- 265 70R 16
- 265 75R 16

My guess is that the 75R may rub off-roading sometimes or turning real tight.

What do you guys think I should do? 75R would probably look hella cool tho. Thanks!!

I'm running 265/75R16's (revo's) w/ no rub except at full stuff. YMMV, but that's a pretty common setup. 96 and 97 pretty much same (I have 97) for that.

You'll have a trace more oomph with the 70's, and a trace more clearance with the 75's. Take your pick.

I have 265/75s on mine and have no rubbing issues at all but '99s and most '00s sit just a tad taller than other Runners but they still fit.

Also, had a dumb question that I thought I would ask. I'm going to have the front brake rotors / pads replaced as well, should I wait to replace the rims / tires till after the work has been done? Does it matter? I was thinking that the larger wheels might add some stress to the brakes? Thanks!

4Runners that came with 16" wheels had larger front discs, (by about an inch or so). The rear drums are all the same size on 15" and 16" wheel 4Runners.

I wondered about this as well, both for upsizing wheels, or for putting 31x10.5x15 tires on my stock 15" wheels. The wheel size wouldn't be bigger but the tire sure would be. Don't know if having a larger front disc is necessary. It's not even possible if you keep the 15" wheel.

Oh and then there's the regear question. Your 4Runner, and all others that came with 15" wheels, (like mine), have 3.909 gears. 4Runners with 16" wheels came with either 4.10 or 4.30 gears, so you may notice slower acceleration, reduced gas mileage, engine lagging, etc. But keep us posted because I'm curious! Huge diffs between the Revos and the BFGs and it really depends on what kind of driving you're going to do . IMO BFGs while they look sweet they aren't the best tire for a daily driver since their wet handling leaves alot to be desired,no mileage warranty and they wil cost you considerably more.
You want a nice AT tire that behaves in the wet and has surprisingly good dry grip on pavement then look at Yokohama Geolandars AT +II. I had a set of them on my '97 Runner and they were a nice tire that doesn't kill your bank account.

Unfortunatly they appear to have gone up about $18 a tire from a few months ago cause the last time I looked they were only $105 a tire.

The Revos (50k treadwear warranty too) are a great tire for intermediate off roading and very good on the street and is a very popular choice on 4Runners but like the BFGs everybody and their mom has 'em.
