That smell comes standard. :biggrin2:

Some here have seen a decrease in the sulfer smell with a side exit exhaust.

Welcome to the world of the 4th gen 4Runner. They all do it and despite what Toyota says, there's really no fix for it. The updated cats still stink just as bad as the earlier ones.

If my cat needs to be replaced, I'm going with aftermarket. The way I figure it, an aftermarket cat will not only be cheaper, but it will be less likely to stink like rotten eggs like the original. Maybe I'll get lucky and someone will steal my original cat.
 
i must be one of the lucky ones, cause i have yet to detect the strong sulfer smell you guys have stated.

Try this:

Roll down the rear window. Punch the gas from a dead stop and accelerate to about 50 mph. Stop. Inhale.

If you don't get a great big whiff of stink, then there's only two possibilities. 1- you don't have an OEM catalytic converter. 2 - You sense of smell is dead.

Seriously though, every 4th gen 4Runner that I've worked on (including my own) stinks after mashing the gas. And I've worked on hundreds of them.
 
i have done what you said toytec99, except not with the rear window down, just to see what the story was ,i see no need to do that regularly (flooring it from 0-60 ) since its not a normal mode of operation for me ,& shouldnt be for anyone driving through towns where the speed limit is 25-35 on most streets, but as afar as that goes, the side exit exhaust instead of straight out the back would/should help with that problem. honestly tho, the only time i did smell something was when i had the unichip installed, even at that, it didnt happen all the time , & it smelled like most of the other new cars on the road. so like i said, riding around with all but the rear window down seems just fine to me. now back in the day when they first started putting cats on all vec., including 4x4s, now that was a smell. but of course my sense of smell may not be what it once was,(dead as you put it) just like everything else in my old age.

Well, my 4Runner doesn't stink very much with the rear window up. But if I put the rear window down, it's really stinky. But only if I punch the gas hard. Driving around normally I don't get any stink at all.
 
yea, thats all i was saying, around town & on highway, normally , ha, even slow driving now a days, i dont really notice anything, but then again, like i said, i no longer do the flooring or speeding thing anymore. so thats probably 1 reason why im not effected like some others.

Oh, yeah, then I agree with you. I never smell anything under normal driving conditions. Only when I mash the gas pedal do I get the stink. If it smelled that way all the time, I'd rip my cat right out and call it a day.
 
from what i understand, its the sulfur in the additives they put in fuel, the engine isnt burning it completely, & the converter is storing it, then releasing it as hydrogen sulfide when you add load to the engine & force more air threw, you get the smell. if this is true, then its nothing new & certainly not just a 4th gen 4runner thing, because you can smell it coming from a multitude of cars on the road. it is said that changing the cat, or switching to a gas with less sulfur may help,... i cant help but wonder, maybe thats why most suvs dont come with motorized rear windows, personally, im not sure why, in this day of where everyone has AC, someone would drive around, with the rear window down, considering all the exhaust fumes on the road today, 4 & a sunroof isnt enough i guess, but hey, whatever floats your boat, i did it years ago myself. the smell is just something we have to live with. but it does bring to mind that old adage, - remember what the doctor said to the man , who asked him , dr. it hurts when i do this,
