Sulfur TSB on 2006

Alright, I just scheduled an appointment to start the process of fixing my Sulfur smell for the 13th (tuesday) at 8:00 am.

I have a 2006 limited, does anyone have any advice to give to make sure this happens? A friend of mine works in service and he is the one I set the appointment with, he told me that he knows of the problem but there really isn't anything that can be done. I told him about the TSB and he told me that he hadn't heard about it, but he told me to come in and bring it with me and he would take a look.

So along with having a printed copy of the TSB to take with me, does anyone else have any advice to offer?

The TSB ought to be sufficient - if you're complaining about the symptoms that the TSB covers and it's under warranty, they should do it. They'll get reimbursed by Toyota.
But just be sure it's worth having the dealer do major surgery on your truck. There's always a chance they'll break something else in the process of fixing the original problem. This thread is a prime example:

Appointment next week...

I have scheduled an appointment for next Monday 08/28. I am getting an oil change and I told the service advisor of the smell of sulfur and told him I would like it taken care of under the warranty.

He said the mechanic will "check it out" and if he finds a problem, they will fix it.

I have a couple of questions for the group.

First, if/when the mechanic confirms the problem, is this a part they can get and repair in the same day?

Second, do you think I should talk to a service manager prior to the appointment and stress the fact that I would like the part replaced as per the TSB?
 
The CATs are what they replace and they normally do NOT have them in stock so they will need to order it. I had to bring in my truck when the parts came in.

It couldn't hurt to talk to the SM. Just state the symptoms of your truck and let him know that you've tried different gas brands and the problem persists. I was fortunate in my case that the SM actually brought up that there was a TSB for the problem (of course I had a printed copy in my glove compartment in case)
 
I had the TSB done on my 06 V8.

I just walked into the Service Advisors office and handed him the TSB. He said he has seen this before and would take care of it for me. He ordered the parts and then a few days later I took the 4-Runner in to get the work done.

Now, I can drive with the back window all the way down and do not notice any sulfur smell. What a dream!

I asked them why they have not taken care of this problem since they have known about it for years. His response was "It costs too much to do it to all Runners. We only do it for people who complain about the smell." As a software engineer, if I took this attitude of only fixing bugs if people complained and not fixing them for future clients, I would be fired! I wonder why Toyota is different? -- POOR CUSTOMER CARE.......!!!!!!!
 
I'm sure most people don't complain, and the replacement cat is much more expensive than the factory cat.

It's also ill-advised to drive with the back window open. If you were smelling sulfur, then exhaust gas is entering the passenger compartment. Just because the smell is gone doesn't mean the air is any safer.

Just curious, what kind of gas do you folks use? Do use folks use regular or premium unleaded? I am just kinda curious if that might be causing the problem.
 
Last winter, I noticed the smell was worse in the winter than it is in the summer. Since the gas formula changes with the seasons, that made me think that gas might be part of the problem. I haven't found any difference in one octane rating versus another.
 
I was running late in picking up my gfriend so I was accelerating hard from every stop sign. Pulled up to her waiting in front of her work. She opened the passenger door and said "YOUR CAR SMELLS LIKE FART". haha

I got a 2007 V8. Does anyone know if there's a TSB on the 07's too? gotta get it switched out.

Regular grade. I've pumped at 76, Shell and Costco. I haven't noticed the sulfur smell at all. My Camry stunk during the first hundred miles and it has since gone away.
 
I have been using Chevron premium grade and I have not noticed the sulfer smell. Just to test I did floor my 4Runner a couple times and did noticed any smell.

Toto you may not see this but I owe you, huge. I have a 2006 4Runner that had that awful smell. I called the dealership about this problem on Monday and they initially told me that nothing could be done, I should change gasolines, etc.

I showed up with the TSB you linked that afternoon and they were quite red-faced. I just picked up my vehicle, it doesn't have an egg smell anymore. Thanks very much!

My research so far, I've found that California has reformulated fuel with a lower sulfur content. might explain why some of the Californian posters aren't having the problem.

What I have not found was whether or not anyone has noticed a performance decrease after having the new components installed.

Hoping to get mine fixed in October when I'm due for my 30,000 mile maintenance.

Anybody notice a difference in power?
