Looking the Heat Shield may be the way to go.
Got quoted $299 to do Crystalline on my windshield, but for $40 I can give the Heat Shield a go.

The WeatherTech seemed intriguing with also claiming to keep warmth in during the cold days. But I have a premium, so seat warmers it is (for the 2 days we get cold enough in Texas).

Im in Texas also, the heatshield works great and has a 2nd side for 100+ days, paired with ceramic tint on everything but the windshield keeps the car cool. I will say one complaint about the heatshield is that if you just pull off window and toss it in passenger side or backseat it stays kind of big, you need to roll it and strap it with the connected velcro piece, unlike the cheap fan style shields that just compress really quickly and stay compressed

Anyone find a sun shade that...

#1 - fits
#2 - blocks out some decent heat

I just got my tint done yesterday, but even in the high 80's my black 4runner is heating up quickly. And in Texas 100's will be around the corner. Considered crystalline for the windshield, but $300 is steep.

Wondering if a good quality sun shade will suffice.

I got my windshield tinted with 50% tint. I live in Kentucky and it does a decent job keeping the inside cooler but still prolly not as much as you would like

Retractables anyone?

I never would have bought these if I hadn’t tried them out in person. The idea seems like a gimmick, but I’ve had them on two different cars for a total over 12 years and they worked perfectly. Probably the biggest drawback is that you need fairly long arms to reach the passenger side to pull them together. I’m 6’ and can reach ok. But not dealing with stowing and unstowing them is worth a lot to me.

It looks like the difference from the ones you posted are that these part in the middle, and mine have a mirror cutout. I've had these on all my vehicles since 2004, and the only failure has been the stick on base peeling off. They sell replacement bases for 9 dollars.

I love mine. You give up a little visibility on the A pillar, but worth it not to wrestle with storage.

I've used the heat shield and really like it. I haven't used Crystalline film, but I use Llumar's Air-Blue-80 on all my windshields. It's clear and it's a little pricey, but it's so worth it. It solves the problem of driver/passenger freezing out the back seaters when the sun keeps the front warm. It's also just more comfortable. Once the vehicle cools down, my AC barely blows and the car stays cool. It probably saves some gas and AC system wear. I also use tinted film in addition to the factory tint on the sides, back, and sunroof. It keeps the vehicle much cooler (windows are warm instead of hot, and sun doesn't feel warm through it). Ballpark is around $300 to have the whole vehicle done. The only down side is you have to redo it (and re pay for it) if you have your windsheild replaced.

I have an exact fit sunshade for my t4r and I live in Texas too. It definitely works and worth every penny. Keeps the heat out so your seat and seat belt does burn you when its piping hot. I dont recall what brand it is, I picked it up at the dealership because it was cheaper than amazon when I looked up the same item through my phone. It's a flexible roll type that you pull off and roll up when not in use.

I've been using an inexpensive auto expressions magic sunshade that I got on clearance at Walmart for $7 about 6 years ago. I bought it for my 2012 Subaru with black leather interior after having the windows tinted within the first couple of months of purchasing the vehicle. I used the sunshade religiously for the last 6 years. And, I rarely used any chemicals to polish the interior of the car and it still looks relatively new even with 160k miles on it. And, the sunshade does a great job keeping the heat and sun out out of the car when parked in direct sunlight for hours.

i can vouch for this too. It fits well, keeps the heat out, and isn't expensive.

Damn windshield is too short for the cheap generic-fit accordion-fold shades. Though I suppose I could just trim the shade. That's what I had to do for the Wrangler with its 15" tall windshield. hwell:

Those of you in hot climates using the WeatherTech or HeatShield: Have you noticed any problem with fumes from the shade causing a haze on the inside of the windshield? I've seen that before from the cheapie shades.

I live a very hot place in the summer and the WeatherTech works great, better than the cheaper more flexible ones I've used before. I have not noticed any more stuff on the inside of the windshield though, every material inside the vehicle off-gasses more than the sun shade would.

The only thing I don't like about the weathertech is it rolls up and doesn't fold up.

From personal experience I now the heat shield fits perfectly in a 2014 and 2017 4 Runner and I was able to purchase from my local dealer for as I recall $ 29.95 plus tax. The only thing is they are real heavy duty and stiff.
