Sunglass compartment fail

Has anyone had issues with the drop-down sunglass holder? My 4runner is 3.5 years old and out of nowhere last week I opened the compartment to get my sunglasses out and it just sprung downward. It has always worked fine so I found it odd that one day it just gave out. I think some kind of dampening gears or spring has slipped up in there. Might have to pop that whole assembly out and see if I can find the culprit.

Anyone else experienced this?

Is it grey? Duck tape! Just kidding. I haven't had this problem, but with the little latches on the sunglasses holder and the compartment below the a/c controls, I wonder how durable they are. Does your "slide latch" button on the sunglasses holder still spring back after you push it? Or is it limp? Maybe a broke spring inside the latch. I've read that the entire assembly comes off pretty easy for those guys installing a home link. If you can find a new sunglasses holder I'm sure the repair would be easy. Search for Homelink and you may find instructions on removal for inspection. Good luck!

Haha, as a matter of fact it is grey. However, the spring latch works fine. It still has spring tension in it, etc. It isn't a huge deal, but it is a little bit of a surprise when you open it and it drops down real fast. The noise it makes when dropping down sounds like some gears that have slipped.

Oh, I see, the latch isn't broken, just drops faster than it used to. Can't help you there, but you should be able to pull the entire assembly off pretty easy. I'll be you'll find the problem when you do. If it's all in tact, put some heavy grease on the gears. That might slow it back down.

Remove the whole assembly from the roof - there is a small plastic gear that lets it open smoothly. You probably just need to pop it back in place. Mine got pushed back into the assembly housing and I had the same problem.

If you find it's broken, I have the entire module w/sunroof switch (just swapped out for one with Homelink) in grey. Let me know if you need it.

Happened to mine, the plastic surrounding the spring broke. Luckily I still had my non-homelink assembly and used the parts from that to fix it.

You guys were right. I took it apart and the little gear piece had come out somehow. At first I didn't see anything, but then realized it had flown out and onto the passenger seat when I got the console to break free. Additionally one of the clip tabs had bent and was on the verge of breaking off completely. I have since added some CA glue and it seems to be strong again. We will see when I try to clip it back in place. Fingers crossed...

Anyone have an extra one of these?

I had the same problem with the door on my roof console. The above photo shows 2 clips (one on each side), Somehow, one of the clips on mine broke off so there is no way for it to stay attached to the unit. I've been looking around to see if I can buy one but it seems that the only way to get one is to buy the whole roof console. Does anyone have one of these laying around, or know where I can find one?

Thanks....

Does anyone have a part number for this? Dealer said I was going to have to buy the whole overhead console.

My sunglasses holder also broke the same way. I carefully glued it in place with super glue and so far it's fine. It's been about a month or so.
