Sunroof auto close set up??

This might be more of a rant more than anything, but anyway...

Okay, so we've got auto-up and auto-down on our windows (99+, anyway), auto open and lock on our doors......so why is the sunroof auto open only? And to top it off, you not only have to hold the close button to close it, but half way through, you have to let go, then press it again. How retarded is this? I think I read in the manual that this was set up for safety reasons. I have no idea how many sunroof related accidents there are every year, but I guarantee that people get their fingers, head, etc stuck in a window before a sunroof. WTF, Toyota??!!

Ok, rant over. :biggrin2:

Anyone have a solution to this? I think 4th Gen's are auto-close, too. Wonder if we can somehow splice in their controls...

yeah it sucks that the sunroof does that, but you gotta agree, there are more idiots out there than you can imagine that I'm sure have caused great bodily harm to themselves when closing a sunroof.

Personally, I'd just like my rear window to have an auto up feature :D

(I know of a guy who was able to get his rear hatch glass to have an auto roll up feature, but it was b/c he installed an aftermarket car alarm that had a button that could be wired to do so.)

True, a lot of idiots out there. Still, if they get hurt while playing with the sunroof, they deserve it. :p

As far as the rear window, that would be a nice feature, too. My friend's 4th Gen has the feature. (I belive auto up and down). I wish I knew a bit more about eletrical work to see if I can splice up some of the 4th Gen modules to our 4Runners.

Oh I agree they shouldn't work a sunroof if it's going to hurt them, but I think that's just why Toyota did what they did on the 3rd gens.

Since you say the 4th gens have both sunroof and rear window auto open/close features, maybe the general public is getting smarter, thus the reason Toyota finally opted for this feature :D

Yeah, we need to find a way so both the sunroof and rear window can open/close at the touch of a button. I know I'm smart enough not to stick something in either while they are closing.

do the 4th gens use modules in all their switches (like the stupid magnum and benzos).

The reason that some of the newer vehicles have Auto-Up and Auto-Close is that they have Pinch protection. The windows can sense when something is obstructing them while closing and they will stop to prevent injury. The Jettas are like this. You can put your arm in any of the windows or sunroof while closing and they will stop.

I would like to see Toyota implement a sensor that causes the moonroof to close when it begins to rain. I have not gotten caught yet, but I have had a few close calls. It's only a matter of time before I come back to my car and open the door to a big flash flood roaring out of my 4Runner.

you can add this feature aftermarket..

with a directed window automation module.
such as this

http://www.amazon.com/Window-Automation-System-DEI-530T/dp/B0009IP4SG

i can take a look at its wiring diagram at work tomorrow and see if i can find a way to get it to work..

The rear window should be easy, however, the sunroof would probably be more difficult, since it has the limit switch at 60/70% of the way closed.

I will try and figure something out.

Oh btw, i will see if i can get it to work without adding a remote starter / security system since the module itself makes regular windows auto-up / down

Cool :biggrin2: . Let us know what you find out.

i have the diagrams for the module, but im having a hard time tracking down the wires for the windows in question.

I am gonna hunt around some more, call my tech support at work, or if someone has a factory service manual that can get me the pin out of the window control motor circuit / button, that would be great.

ok couldnt find the tech docs.

I am gonna just take a look at the wires in my truck tomorrow, that "cover" (that holds the sunglasses and stuff) is easy to remove

Sorry for the wait on this one guys..

yes actually
i got the pin-out of the sunroof controls
well 98% figured out

When you take off the domelight assembly (which includes the switch, relay, and circuit for the sunroof) you will see a 6-PIN harness going to the sunroof circuit. And an 8 pin harness that goes to the plug.

The 8 pin harness (which i will be using for pin # / color descriptions) has two pins / wires for the domelight..i will point them out
#- HARNESS COLOR - MODULE COLOR
1 - WHITE / BLACK - BLACK
2 - RED / BLUE - BLUE
3 - RED - YELLOW
4 - WHITE - TAN
5 - BLUE/ WHITE - GREEN
6 - WHITE/ BLACK - BLACK
7 - BLUE / RED - RED
8 - BLUE / YELLOW - GREY

PINS 6 + 8 are for the dome light
6 - WHITE/BLACK - BLACK - GROUND
8 - BLUE/YELLOW - GREY - +12V

OK...im gonna refer to module colors from here on out

the harness on the module is in this order

7-RED - accessory power (also, has the 30 or 40 second delay on this wire)
4-TAN - +12 when closing
5-GREEN - +12 when opening
1-BLACK - ground
2-BLUE - +12 (status) closed or vented
3-YELLOW- +12 (stauts) saftey point / vented
- GROUND when fully shut

What does this all mean? And how does it work?

I cant fully explain.

However the ones we should be worried about is
7-RED - accessory power (also, has the 30 or 40 second delay on this wire)
4-TAN - +12 when closing
5-GREEN - +12 when opening
1-BLACK - ground

Now in theory....
if you were to give 4 +12V while giving 5 ground, you could close the sunroof

if you were to give 5 +12V and 4 ground, you could open the sunroof

If this theory is correct, it would be easy to incorporate an aftermarket window module in.

You would need to wire DIRECTLY at the motor. and that MAY BE difficult, the wires are well cut and sized, not much slack.

I think this will work.

I am gonna draw some diagrams...and figure some stuff out..then i will let you guys know what we can do.

Sorry for the long post.

BTW, if your planning on doing this yourself, double check the wire colors in your car with a digital multimeter..

yea..i have an idea of what would work, but i AM not testing it on my sunroof if it isnt correct :-p

If i can find a sunroof mechanisim to just test it on, id be happy, but im not that risky.

Seems you guys have a decent amount of interest, ill call back my tech support place tomorrow, see if i can talk to someone diff who would know whats up

I know this is old but I was wondering if anyone figured this out yet. It's sunroof season and that feature to protect re****s is annoying the hell out of me! This thread started off so promising and had me looking forward to the weekend and then. . . Somebody must know how to do this:awais:

when i was curious about this as well, i starting doing alot of testing on the wires that control the whole system. You can see the wires by removing your overhead sunglass holder, the switch / relay are attached right to it. I think i got it figured out on paper how to not have the "safety" stop, but auto-close is definitely require a window roll up module, and there is not alot of room up there.

Sorry that i haven't really taken the time to figure this whole thing out like i intended, but between work, and all my own crazy projects, this is kind of on the back burner for me.

I have to do some work on that console that houses the switch / relay for the sunroof soon anyway, so i will do the testing..again (i cant find the papers i wrote down all the info on) and see if i can re-figure out the whole thing.

Question for all of you...are you more concerned about auto-close? Or would getting rid of the idiot feature be what everyone is looking for?

My rant is, Being sure it is compleatelt colosed . The other day it started to rain. I was 99.9% sure that it was fully closed. I decided to run out in the rain to look and make sure. Sure enough, after I got inside, I ran my finger around the inside edge and felt water. All I had to do is push the button a split second and it was closed. Wish I knew of a way (such as a light ) to show it is fully retracted closed. One small drip can ruin the inside lineing.
