Sunroof auto will NOT re-initialize after battery change

just changed out batteries in both my 2004 4Runner and my wifes 2004 Lexus RX330. All the windows, power tailgate / tailgate windows, etc re-initialized per the instructions provided on the forum.

However, on both vehicles, neither of the sun roof auto buttons worked. Have tried them multiple times, no success.

You have to hold the buttons down to operate, none of the auto funtions work; have tried it with engine running, engine off but power on, etc.

What should I do next? Thanks

Put the old batteries back. lol j/k... Take it to the dealer.

The moonroof re-initialization is a little different than the other windows. Maybe you tried this already, but here are the directions if somebody needs them:
Hold the TILT UP button and keep holding it for a few seconds after it tilts up. Mine usually will tilt up to the highest position and then come back down just a little bit after it's initialized. That should reset it.

Don't bother with putting the old battery back. That wouldn't fix the problem. The reason the initialization and the auto open/close functionality is lost is because power was disconnected.

If you're able to restore the auto open/close with the old battery, it would be lost again when you need to replace that battery and put you right back at square one.

You missed the "j/k" in MikesToy's post. Sel1005 knew not to put in the old battery.

Thanks guys, everything is totally cool on the 4Runner... even the moon roof, and yup, I did not try to re-install the old battery....

On the Lexus RX330 though, I am still at odds with the moon roof issue; I tried the same tilt approach, several times, nada, zippo. Lexus forum tells me to do the same, local dealer tells me to do the same, but no success.

Actually it was pretty funny, I asked the guy that changed the battery out about re-initializing the auto functions, and he stared at me in his best bubba look like "hey man, what the f... are you talking about......". After 30 sec or so I told him there were auto functions that were impacted and his best was "OK, don't know about that, everything worked when I connected the new battery"

Windows, power tail gate, etc all worked just as outlined but the darn moon roof does not want to cooperate....

Any thoughts from here? Thanks again for all your help everyone!

The reset process for the moonroof on an RX330 is similar, but requires you to hold the button down for a couple of extra seconds after each of the four operations: tilt up, tilt down, slide open, slide closed. You have to do all four before the system is initialized and the one-touch will start working.

Please note that I had this happen after a battery change on my '05-4Runner and NEVER could get it back in to place after trying all procedures. Finally took it to dealer and they fixed it (very expensive) and they checked with Toyota and Toyota refused to pay for the repairs even though I had the Platinum warranty. That was a bummer.

The OEM controls are different. Yours is most likely an aftermarket moonroof.

Hey guys i Know this is an old thread and I am new to forums and Don't really know why your not supposed to post after they get a little old but I just wanted to say that I own a 2004 rx330 suffering from the same symptoms and now is fixed. I used the information on this site and pusehd and held the auto open button all the way back and held for 3 seconds and then all the way forward for 3 seconds it then did an auto open shut and now everything works perfect!! the tilt used to open the roof and vise versa. thanks so much!! :thanks:
