sunroof/headroom question

I have read on several post that having the sunroof gives you less headroom. In fact someone pointed out the toyota website gives the with and without dimensions and it's less with the sunroof. Here is what I don't get and I'm sure some of you can enlighten me. I have the 06 SR5 with the sunroof. The design of the headliner appears to have a shape near the opening of the sunroof in all directions that actually is sunken down. This would seem to have the effect of allowing for the sunroof to be fitted with the shade not creating any additional shortened ceiling height assuming the 4 runners without the sunroof have this same lowered headliner design in the same area where the sunroof is installed. I can't remember what the 4runner without the sunroof looks like in this area. Did they put in a completely different molded headliner to accomadate the sunroof in some way?

I haven't seen the 4R model without the sunroof, but my guess is yes, they used a different molded headliner. I'm not an expert on this, but obviously the sunroof retracts between the steel roof and the headliner, so the headliner needed to be dropped down somewhat to allow for this.
Again I haven't seen the model without the sunroof, but my guess is the headliner is higher in this model.

The headliner on a sunroof-less 4runner is higher as far as headroom space. This makes sense since there is no extra space needed between the roof and the headliner to accomodate the sunroof, motor, and any other mechanical hardware which would lower the headroom clearance.

I looked at both models when I shopped for my 4runner (and yes, the headliners are noticeably different) and chose no sunroof. I had an old BMW 325 and never used its sunroof, I figure I wouldn't need one for my 4runner either. I figured it was one less thing to worry about malfunctioning, leaking, or getting dinged since it was glass. I usually just roll the window down or turn on the AC if I need some air. I also have this ridiculous (and improbable) fear that some seagull will drop a surprise turd into the cabin. I like a clean look of a roof too, but I guess to each his own.

If you sit in a 4runner with the sun roof and then sit in a 4runner without the sunroof you will definately notice the difference in head room.

That is why mine does not have a sun roof.

most vehicles with a sunroof have less head room, its not just restricted to the 4runner. my dad is 6'2" and has no problems driving my truck. i think he just lowers the seat and tilts it back a little more lol.
