Sunroof leaks

My sunroof leaks! I am pretty sure it is the sunroof. The headliner is stained. I tried clearing the drains but I still have water coming in. I called the stealership and they said I can't buy the seal, but the whole glass and seal for the tune of about $697.00. My friend said silicone it shut! Any ideas?

Take it to an independent sunroof place and see what they quote you. If you don't know of one, call a couple collision shops and see if they outsource sunroofs. The reason I mention is that a lot of places outsource the sunroof problems and then charge you more money. If you deal with the sunroof place directly you'll save money.

I had an issue with my 93 Celica's sunroof. It got stuck open and I was able to get it closed but it still leaked. I called the dealership and spoke to a nice guy who suggested I call the shop they use directly as the dealership was pretty busy and it'd be a while till they could schedule me. Well sure enough the independent shop quoted me much cheaper than the dealership and got me fixed up within 2 weeks including getting the parts ordered. They couldn't order the parts until they took apart my sunroof to see what had broke.

'04 sunroof Leak

I got into my 4Runner a month or so ago and noticed the passenger side carpet was wet. I thought my daughter didn't close the door all the way. THEN I went through a touchless car wash and water poured in, not directly from the sunroof but from the passenger side panel from the roof to the door.? I have a sunroof with an air damn, leaves and stuff collect in the air damn and I notice water pools there. I read in here about the controlled leak, seriously? why would they build a sunroof with a controlled leak? Is it more likely that it is the seal around the sunroof or are these drains turning out to be the culprit? any advice is appreciate.

Funny, I just dealt with this issue last week. My sun roof was leaking for several months, but it was never bad as its been cold for the most part. But lately its warmed up and last week we had a rainy day and a lot of water leaked through. So I covered the spot that was leaking first with silicone (on the outside and inside) and then with some sealing tape on the outside, and so far no more leaks.

I had this problem when I bought mine. I pulled the headliner down enough to see the bottom. When I poured water in the tray I was able to exactly where it was cracked causing the leak. Sealed and never a problem again. GL

Any updates on this gang? Should I use silocone or superglue on that middle plastic seam?

Silicone

Clean the outside of your glass real well with alcohol. Take care to get deep into the crevice between the glass and the plastic frame.
You want to run a nice neat small bead of clear silicone around the edge of the glass and the plastic frame. Run a little branch of silicone up the split in the plastic trim facing the windshield.
The drain holes are absolutely for draining water that gets past the outside of the sunroof. The problem is when the trim and seal fails on the sunroof glass, the water leaks through it, not around it. The water will drip right down into the headliner causing all sorts of problems.
I battled mine for a long time with superglue and dabs of silicone, but nothing worked until I ran the complete bead around the glass.
I have been leak free ever since.
