Sunroof or Not?

Hello everyone! I'm brand new to this forum and had a question. Has anyone been having problems with the sunroof in the 04-05 T4R? I'm going to order a new 06 Limited V-6 4x4 in the next couple of weeks and can't decide on a sunroof or not. I would really love to have one but it's not worth it if they're problematic. I've read several threads in this forum about the sunroof problems that some were having. Can't decide! Can anyone help?:awais:

How tall are you? I am just over 6foot and the sunroof made a huge diff in head room. It just made if feel a bit more open. I have not had any problems with my SR and would take any little problems just for the head room alone.

Remember this is a forum to let folks piss about stuff so many little problems could be blown up a bit.
 
I very much wish I got a sunroof on mine ... I miss having one. That is my only purchase regret.
 
I've had problems with mine and it was replaced under warranty. First there was a squeaking and grinding noise when closing, so they put felt and grease and that fixed it temporarily. But then it wouldn't close any longer so they had to replace the motor and some other parts. After all that was done, I haven't had a problem since so hopefully the gremlins have been removed. You do lose some head room with the sunroof but it is nice to have the open feel of glass above you.

I had a sunroof on my previous car so I wanted it for my truck and I couldn't be happier.
 
Well I never use it. I haven't had any major problems, but have had a annoying noise everytime I close it. When I bought the car, I didn't want one, unfortunately, when you buy a 4runner, the car already has options and your stuck with whats available. IMO, the Toyota website is not really useful when you try to build a car.
 
I had a sunroof in my old car, and I have one in my 4r. To me the benefits of having one are worth more than the possible issues people have had. I will say mine is making a weird pop when I open it, but it still works good as far as i can tell.

But it actually decreases the headroom, so if you're a few inches taller you will hit your head. That said, I would have gotten a sunroof if it weren't for the height issue.
 
So the sun roof decreases the headroom?

If I understand correctly it hangs lower than a roof that has no sunroof?

Is the roof lower with a sunroof to make room for it to slide back?

It just feels more open with the glass?

How about with the sunroof cover open and the glass closed. Would that make the roof higher?
 
You may have a hard time finding a Limited without a power moonroof. I love mine and had no problems.

How long are you planning on keeping the truck (do you trade often?) Then you may not have to deal with any issues past the warranty period. Didn't want one so I don't have one. To many potential problems, especially with ice and snow, as I keep my vehicles for the longterm.
 
I LOVE my sunroof!!! But, I am in sunny southern California where it only rains about 2 months a year. I'm originally from Louisiana and you are in Alabama where we both know a big ole thunderblammer might blow up any hour of the day/night during this time of year.

The only thing I regret was Toyota Corp. cheating me out of the 5 spd tranny in the 03-04 models. They should send me a $1000 tranny rebate check for that goof!
 
I have a sunroof, but only because I couldn't find a Limited around here that didn't have one. I'm not that tall at 5' 11'' and have to lower the seat more than I'd like to keep from rubbing against the headliner. Plus, to avoid heat gain in the interior during the summer I leave the shade closed all the time anyway, so what's the point of having the darn thing.

If I had one thing I'd do different with the truck, which has been a great vehicle by the way, I'd order one without the sunroof and wait for delivery.
 
I had one in last truck and found that I never used it much. I don't have in my SE 05 and didn't want it either. Not worth the extra cost. There good to get the heat out in summer but I never rode with it open,very noisey. I got the window vents to let heat out and they do a good job...my 2c.
 
I'm 6'2" with a 33" inseam. Our '03 has a sunroof and plenty of headroom for me. It's been trouble free, and so was the sunroof in our '98 Limited.

I have one in my '05 4Runner, and I am glad it is there. While it was not the #1 thing on my list, I wanted one because my girlfriend's Highlander has one and she really, really likes it.

I seldom open it, but like to slide the shade back at night. Maybe that's why they call it a moon roof instead of a sunroof. ;): I find myself using the "tilt" option more often than opening it the whole way. I kind of like that light amount of ventilation that it provides.

No problems with it....Knock on wood!.....but my 4Runner will be under warranty during the whole term of my lease. I bet it would be expensive to fix the power mechanism if it did go bad.

Thanks everyone! This is a very informative forum. The sunroof issue is the only one I'm trying to decide on before I place my order for a new 06 T4R. Yes I am ordering, so I will have a choice. I'm stationed overseas in support of OIF III and won't be home until Dec, so I don't have a problem waiting on it to come in. I think I would reall love the sunroof, but it scares me to think that the dealereship would have to ripe my new T4R apart on the inside if I ever had problems with it. I would prob only keep it for about 3-4 years anyway before I sold it and ordered another one. I just don't know if it's losing sleep over wondering if it will ever give me trouble. This will be my 1st T4R but not my 1st Toyota. Just sold an 04 Tacoma Prerunner. Great truck! Thanks again guys for all the help. I'm sure I'll have more questions before I place my order.:beer:
 
I too ordered my Limited 2005 4Runner. I ordered one with a sunroof and love it so far.

Of course, I'm also in Southern California so that factored into the decision.

And this will be my first vehicle with a sunroof as well.
