Sunroof question??

I thought I would post this here because it might get more views.

On my 05 runner the sunroof is a little loose in the closed position. I noticed this while washing it today. I think it is causing it to leak but I'm not 100% sure because I was opening and closing it while the roof was wet from washing. I did see a few drips on the underside area were the seams would be. But like I said, it could be from opening it while wet.

It looks like the sunroof sits a hair below the roof line and the seal isn't getting a tight fit. If I press on the sunroof it will give about a 1/8 inch or so. Is this normal?? Anyone else experienced this? Thanks for any help.

but I wonder where the water goes if it does get in. I sometimes hear a trickly noise coming down one of the side posts ("A" pillar?), and think Toyota must have put a moon roof drain in there. They have to have a place for water to go when it rains if your roof is partially open & water gets in there.

It could be that your rooftop cargo rails are not tighten. These are mounted to the roof with bolts under the plastic covers. The roof rails also hold down the "infamous" weatherstripping which tends to buckle up on the 4th generation Runner. There is a TSB for the plastic molding running the roof line beneath the roof rail system. I had mine replaced about 6 weeks after purchasing the vehicle.

Water has a place to go

The moonroof seals never looked perfect on mine, and I have looked at a few on the dealership lot too. They all have some amount of puckering near the round corners. I don't know why they can't make a nice fitting seal??

There are 2 drains in the moonroof pan. The pan surrounds the moonroof, and any water that gets by the seals will not get into the interior of the truck.

BUT, if dirt, leaves, twigs, ect get blown into the space between the headliner and the moonroof while driving, it is possible for those drains to become plugged. If this were to happen and you had a leak, then water would end up in the headliner and interior.

There is a running water sound over my head when it rains VERY hard. No water in the headliner, just the sound from the rain gutters at the roof rack mount positions.

Mine is like this too. The gap on the driver's side is also smaller than the gap on the passenger's side. But, I haven't noticed any leaks.

If water does get into seams, there is a drain running along the driver's side and empties out by the rear wheel well. You can see the tube by taking off the door that houses the jack and tools in the cargo compartment.

You got me confused I'm not sure how the roof rails corespond with the sunroof.

Does any of your guys' sunroof have the loose play in it? If you press on it will it give about an 1/8 inch?

Thanks for everyones input so far. Glad that it seems possibly normal. I figure if I have a leak I would have had some headliner damage by now.

I think what is being said is that the drain system around the sunroof will direct water out of the vehicle - thereby not allowing a headliner leak.

BTW - Mine has no lateral play, but will go down a little if I apply some force.
