Sunroof tilt stuck "UP" 1997 4R

I've searched numerous times but barely found anything with the problem I'm having or if I do it just leads to a dead end. Any ways, I usually drive around with my sunroof tilted up and hasn't given me a problem till today. When I press the "DOWN" button it just makes a click noise, but doesn't budge. Any ideas as to why it won't shut? Thanks in advance.

mine quit working when screws eventually backed out, disconnecting the control arms from the motor. You may have to take down the head liner and sunroof assembly before you can get eyes on the problem. This would be a major job. Replacement parts may be difficult or impossible to find. Or, push it closed and don't open it again. Silicone around the edges maybe.

I know it rains in Hawaii but be thankful your not in Seattle.
It sounds like the sunroof motor is failing/failed?

LoL, I used to live in puyallup if that counts. That's what I was afraid of. Is there any possible way of pushing it down manually?

Well, I know my Passat has a hidden compartment above the rear view mirror where you take a socket wrench and loosening will manually open the sunroof and tightening will close it.
I do not think we have this feature.
I imagine that the manual sunroof feature is the only smart German engineering. AND its a design to prepare for upcoming issues. Why cant they make everything else in their vehicles that easy!

I dont want to be the bearer of bad news but most say that if there is a clicking from the button but no movement, then the motor is bad.

However, there are a few tricks in which people have tried and have had work for them, such as:

1) Hold the Close button for up to 3 minutes. (It will reset the motor)

2) Spray WD-40 on the railing. (Maybe the sunroof is out of alignment)

3) Try to gently push the roof down while hitting the close button. (If nothing, then it is mostly the motor.)

4) Check the fuses for anything blown.
