Sunroof Visors, yea or nay?

I think they look neat from the outside, but I got rid of mine after a few years. I didn't like the way it impeded my view of the moon or the way it cupped water up there after a rain shower or car wash. It also did nothing to stop the buffetting with the roof slid back.

No Ron I was replying with sarcasm on that one.

Although there was some folks a while back doing that on some honda IIRC. Dyno'd it and in the super low rpms made a few hp like 5 or something but up past 1800 it became a restriction.

Its my understanding they aren't really meant to quell the buffeting but rather the wind whip in the car? I was just thinking the dual flap one might have that as a bonus side effect.

After rain or a car wash, it held water? Where? So if you'd open the roof after a car wash, you'd get a downpour of water on you? That would suck!

I love my moonroof visor... My last 3rd gen didn't have one, and when I opened the moonroof going over 50 mph, it was really noisy and a lot of turbulent air coming right down on my head. My current 3rd gen has the visor, and I can open the moonroof all the way at highway speeds and it seems to create a nice laminar airflow right over the moonroof. It's a nice quiet breeze without the air pounding my head like it was without the visor. I'll usually open the moonroof and sometimes the rear window, but close the other windows when I want the airflow but not all the highway noise.

i feel like it balances out the roof rack if you have one.

I had never really taken the time to appreciate my visor until today. I was riding down the highway going about 70 MPH and it was very quiet. I got the great feeling of the wind in my hair, but without the noise. It was great.

I have a factory one that came on my truck. Thought about removing it like the bug guard, but I guess its okay if it can offer some sort of protection from road debris.

My 99 did not have one and I considered finding an OEM one to mount-then discovered they were no longer sold by Toyota. Drilling some holes into the top of my roof also did not really appeal to me.

Based on RonMaiden's mention of his satisfaction with his- I bought the 35.5" wide Auto VentShade model (77003 I believe it is but I can verify if anyone really wants the specifics)

As mentioned by a few others it really does quell the noise and turbulence of an open sunroof. I no longer even have to crack my back or side passenger windows to control the buffeting wind effect that I had before.

The AVS model I have has a slightly taller center section and it does seem to also lift the air flow up and over my (mostly flush mounted) roof rack. I no longer hear the wind noise off the rack. You can see photos via my Facebook link.

All in all I am quite glad to have spent the $38 (Amazon shipped price) and just today traveling 75 mph on the interstate my 17 year old son remarked how much quieter the airflow is with the sun roof either retracted into the roof line or popped up only at the rear.

With regards to not letting rain in, some rain will come in the open roof in a downpour or puttering around town with just some drizzle -but at highway speeds the rain does not seem able to make it in the opening.

Bear in mind it rarely does rain out here like it does for others of you in other locations. I have not had an occasion where rainfall is trapped in the space between the visor and the roof opening but I can visualize that yes that might occur. The solution I do believe would be to simply not open the sunroof for a period of time until that water on the roof disperses.

No problem Ron and yes,I think the AVS one being a bit taller than OEM helps air go over the sunroof easier.

Finally installed my dual flap today. Ive been putting it off for lack of desire to wiggle my hands in to get it seated, but tackled it with patience today.

The flaps do indeed direct air - if I put my drivers side near 90 degrees it's like having air conditioning blowing on my face on a hot sunny day.

I cant tell about buffeting yet because I can't get my lab out of the car today. Hes camping for fear of a ride that might leave him behind, and consequently I cant roll up all my windows :

I'll report back on that later in the week when I can get some highway miles.

I went a junk yard and took a visor off a 95/96 runner and put it on my 97. The airflow into the car was dramatically decreased. I can drive on the highway with just my sunroof open with no turbulence. I don't know if mine works better than other because its from a different model, but it's definitely one of my favorite finds at the junkyard. (Paid 5$).
