Super Bowl 50

Cam's avoidance to go after his fumble was very telling. He visibly backed off, that was strange to see in any game, much less the Super Bowl. The tantrum looked just like a 4 year old pounding his fists on the ground. Very unimpressive.

He may be a great player but he sure has a lot of maturing to do if he's going to make it through the long haul. We all know Peyton will retire but he's always been a model of maturity even when losing which I always found refreshing.

apparently sources close to the panthers said the team came into the game assuming they would win with minimal effort, not surprised based on the way they played

The reason they weren't smiling is that they went down so quickly. They were smiling before. At least from what I saw. Cam was running around according to the ESPN staff "looking like Elvis." before the game started.

The whole team was in full uniform from about an hour an half before the game started. before that cam was wearing a black and gold superman shirt with black an gold beats headphones. Not very elvis like but either way I noted the panthers remained on the field warming up long after the broncos had made the move back to the locker room. (doesn't seem like something a team thinking they had an easy victory ahead of them would do) They seemed to stay until they were pushed off the field by the pregame show setup staff. Like they were trying to get something new down pat that they hadn't perfected. A new snap count perhaps? who knows... The few times the cameras showed any of there faces or expressions they all seemed super serious, even angry. Something not usually noted during their warm ups. typically they're in an out of warm up drills greeting fans on the sidelines, smiling, shaking hands etc. Generally showing happiness to be there, this seemed different. Obviously the Super Bowl is way different than any home game. Just something I noted.

I would have much rather seen the bronco's defense performance against the panthers firing on all cylinders. From what I've gathered, cam dismissed himself from the press conference due to this being the first time ever the winning player and losing players were being interviewed right next to each other in the same room. It seemed he couldn't hear his own reporters over the earned bragging of von miller. It was also said that other opposing team members were provoking him behind the curtain areas. I can't say I would have hung around for it either. Can't say it was the right move as well haha. Sure it looks bad but I believe cams proven he doesn't really care what others opinions of him are.

As a Seahawks fan I find satisfaction in the Broncos' SB win as they knocked out both the Pats and the Panthers. It was especially gratifying to see karma-blind Cam Newton pout and eventually walk out on his presser one day after being named MVP.

IMO Bruno Mars was the only good thing about the halftime show.

Through his aggressive style, Lynch gave the 'Hawks an identity; a swagger. He sure was fun to watch. I think his antics during the run-up to SB XLIV were a distraction as was the rehab situation this season. Nevertheless he leaves a lasting legacy. Thank you #24.

I think they were referring to more on the way he was acting and how the crowd was reacting to him as he was running around the stadium.

I agree with that. And I'm the last person he should ever think he would have to "please." with any of his actions. Like I've said before though, it's easy to like or excuse those actions as teammates when you're winning. But it may be a different story when you're losing. Towards the end of that game when they were still fully in it, he was sitting alone with a dejected look on his face. When I think of any great qb (be it Manning, Brady, etc etc), I feel like they're mentality is to find a way win and to figure out how to do so. They're looking at charts, talking to coordinates and coaches and on and on.

Like I said I just feel like you have to act differently as the starting qb of an NFL team. Give the team that just beat you more credit. One of the few things he did say was,"ain't nothing special that they did." Are you kidding me? And then he came out today saying "show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser." But again, I'm the last person he needs to please.

I'll always have a soft spot for Derrick Fenner. He only had one decent season with the Hawks, but it was a great one. I feel like he ran similarly to Lynch where he never avoided contact.

You can admit it would be very hard to lose at that point, but come, on man...

I like what the Panthers coach said...Great perspective. Basically the Broncos were at the point the Panthers were two years ago and look where they are at now...all this with an old guy at QB.

Here's the bottom line. What we think is irrelevant. Because none of this is going to prevent us from watching football. If anything, it's going to make us watch more football.

The two parts I do feel are relevant after is one, how much backlash Cam saw from OTHER NFL players after the game. That showed me how much his actions got under the skin of other players around the league. And the other is the part where Cam's defense of himself not diving for the ball was basically saying that he didn't want to get injured. Considering it was the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl and you were only down by 6 points at the time, I'm not sure that's what the other guys in your locker room wanted to hear you say. Especially with one of them playing with a broken foot and another one playing with an arm full of stitches.

If there's two things you don't want as an NFL quarterback, is to have any of the guys turn against you in your own locker room or to have any of the guys facing you want to hit you a little harder. But that's coming from someone who has absolutely no idea what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. Just an armchair one.

Fortunately all of Cam's team members and coaches came out in full support of Cam's decisions on an off the field. Not to mention the 1000s of local fans welcoming them home on there return from the super bowl. Cam's defense in not diving for the foot ball was not that he was afraid of injury or scared etc it was "he knew his leg was in an awkward enough position that he had to re-adjust the approach".. Cam sacrifices his body and limbs more than any other NFL quarterback seen this past season. Wilson may have come close in physical contact but he rarely takes hits unless theres no other option commonly diving to down the ball.

Your suggesting that an NFL franchise 5 year 100million dollar contract quarter back, actually make a decision to physically injure himself in order to prevent one fumble turn over??? Cams 26 years old and has many more super bowls to attend unfortunately he won't be disembodying himself for you or any other haters in the near future. Not to mention... If any quarterback is doing his job right.. Every defender should want to hit him harder...

whats relevant: Cam is still a amazing quarter back with numbers yet to be touch by any other. Carolina panthers have a scary amount of cap space this year for signing. Our star receiver is coming back this season. Everyone is going to have to deal with more dancing and more touchdown balls given to kids! I love it!

I thought his response was short clear and concise. The only people making a big deal out of it is the media, because they didn't get enough soundbites to work with and make more incriminating headlines.
Do we really need to compare it to when Manning lost a superbowl and walked straight off the field?

Cam is 26 year old who just had one of the biggest moments in his life and got beat. From a logical perspective he spoke the quick truth and left it at that. There is nothing else to say from such a young professional. In regards to the fumble. . .why is everyone focusing on that and not all the interceptions?

That is not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is that the implication is that he made the decision to avoid the possibility of injury. Which to be able to do in a half a second tells me that it was something that was on his mind before the play even happened. Cam is a beast. No doubt about it. But one of the interesting things is you could see that the hits were effecting his game (but come on, who wouldn't get effected by those guys teeing off on you). He was sliding in situations where he normally would seek contact etc etc.

And what else are people going to come out and say but support him? Of course they are. And I'm not saying there are guys that don't. All I'm saying is that it will be an interesting narrative IF they start to lose.

I also agree that they're (Carolina) going to be good for many years to come. Hopefully the Cam/Wilson rivalry will be the new Peyton/Brady one. I'm a Cam hater and I need to be. You can't love your rivals! And coming from a long time Hawks fan who has dealt with a LOT of low years, it's great to have meaningful rivalries.

But trust me, there is a next level of hits that these guys can do that you do not want to open.

I think the biggest issue is that people feel you can't do all the stuff that lead up to the Super Bowl, lose and then not expect there to be some backlash after. But I agree with you too about the post-game interview. Where I feel he missed a good chance was his press conference days later.

Let's look at this a bit differently. Look at the '85 Bears (for those old timers old enough to remember). Those guys came out with a music video called the Super Bowl Shuffle DURING the regular season. Think of how crazy cocky, arrogant etc etc that is! But they backed it up and won. Imagine how much sh*t they would have gotten had they lost.

My point is that if you're going to bring more attention to you when things are good, you have to expect that same amount and then some when you lose. Seems the best thing to do is to show that it doesn't effect you. If you want to be Superman, don't show people your kryptonite.

In his second year in the league (1984) HOFer Dan Marino won the MVP award and lost the SB. He never went to another SB. HOFers Warren Moon and Dan Fouts never went at all.

There are no guarantees. Winners play with urgency because they know they may not get another chance.

The Panthers have a window of opportunity that will close in the near future. Maybe Cam gains some maturity and wins one. Maybe not. Gotta take your best shot when you have the chance.

Pro football has pretty much lost me over the teams and fans ignoring integrity issues, be it Ray Lewis (his buddy murdered a guy with a knife after he hopped out of Rays SUV, and ol Ray sped off with the bloody murderer in his SUV, uttering, "my career's not going to end this way". No one cooperated with the police, and no one went to jail. Or Cam Newton's theft of a laptop resulting in his dismissal from Florida, proving Auburn will take anyone. Cam's successor at Auburn, Nick Marshall, had been dismissed from Georgia for stealing iPhones from the other players. Fans (short for fanatics) disguise integrity issues by calling it youthful mistakes. The list goes on, I only have so much time. I choose to limit what I watch, and aside from Cams arrogance, his dishonesty made me chuckle when he got the beat down.

So...you're limiting what you watch to the one game the NFL wants you to watch the most? They got ya right where they want ya.

:whipping2

The narrative when Cam was losing was that he was immature, needed to grow up, etc. etc. Hasn't seemed to have changed since he started winning lol. I reckon people started accepting his methods. a wins a win they say lol. The same thing would happen that has always happened if the team starts a losing streak. Fans will fall off and everyone will blame Cam or whichever quarterback is in place at that time. We praised Delhome however you spell his name for stepping up in 2003 like he did. Then practically hung him in the streets after those interceptions at the super bowl he made it to. Even though the teams demise wasn't entirely his fault. So to see our franchise quarterback come home after that performance and still have support says a lot for the current panther fans.

I refuse to believe cam was worried about injury before the play happened. He makes split second decisions every option play he runs. (which didn't seem to work out so well for him during the Super Bowl but annnnnyyway. lol) I still trust that he felt his knee enter an awkward position and reacted. I've done it many of times. step wrong to pick something up then back up to readjust where the footing is. Hard to say weather getting recovering that fumble would have changed the outcome of the game either. So to say he chose not getting injured over a chance at victory is a stretch.

I doubt the sea hawk/ panther rival will go anywhere anytime soon. I'm sad to see beast mode leave though. he's fun to watch! even off the field lol. "y'all know why I'm here" haha I just hope we can hang on to our awesome corner back Josh Norman. He's just become a free agent. If we through our franchise tag on him he'll stay but nothings been leaked yet. if he leaves we're looking at an estimated 41 million in cap space!

Exactly why I'm not watching football anymore, college or pro. I thought my own team was winning the right way and above it all and that was fun, but then they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar too and I've been pretty much done since then.

I'm a Bronco's fan and my wife, being from Charlotte, is obviously a Panthers fan, so I enjoyed the outcome of the game. For a minute. Then I cuddled up with my mutt on the couch for the next week. I really enjoyed the game though. I was a little worried that Manning would be a turnover risk against that defense, but he didn't give Kuechly a chance and just played a really safe game and let the Broncos defense win it.

That said, I enjoy watching the Panthers play. I really like the team and, while I've struggled liking Cam through his arrogant persona, I have come a ways to have a little more respect for him.

I wonder if Cam's new roll as a father has anything to do with his performance. Obviously, I don't know what his involvement has been as a father, but it does make me curious if his mindset has changed or even if he was just sleep deprived. It may be easy to shrug this off and say he hasn't been that involved, or that he has a nanny to take care of his son, or whatever reason he's a rich professional QB that blah blah blah, but I am genuinely curious if even at some subconscious level, Cam being a new parent just discretely affected how he makes some decisions.

Of course I'm also perfectly okay with accepting that he got steamrolled by the number one defense in the NFL. :biggrin1:
