Super entertaining Cherokee Forum thread

wow... that is entertaining to read... I am surprised some of those posters CAN read... I love the broadstrock 'jeep is better b/c it is american...' putting the economics of it aside (lets not drag politics into this) I firmly believe my Runner is the most capable off road vehicle I have ever owned.

I've owned:
85 Cherokee with 2.8 5spd
88 Wrangler 4.2 5spd
97 Grand Ch 4.0 auto
05 Wrangler 4.0 6 spd

My bro owned:
88 Cherokee 4.0 auto
97 Cherokee 4.0 auto (still has)

So clearly I don't dislike Jeeps!!! but I would rather have my runner for creature comforts and off road ability any day!

I like the one post (#36) where the guy says he can find 4.0's on craigslist all day long but no Toyota motors to be found. (That'd be because all the motors are still in our trucks running, lol.)

Good read, thanks for passing along.

Haha...good read. I have owned 4 XJ's and they can be built into very capable vehicles. I've had a blast in them all. Now, I haven't had a blast constantly replacing parts that break on them. Keep in mind when reading those comments because those vehicles and parts are easier and cheaper to come by you have a different element among owners that I would be is much more rare here (not trying to be mean, just honest).

The only thing I'm doing to this 4R is installing the 99 Highlander coils and 265/75 tires. Compared to what I used to drive (the Jeeps) this thing drives great and is nice and quiet, I don't want to lose that. I can't compare the offroad abilities other than the minor offroading I've done and stock to stock there's no comparison. 4Runner wins...even with street tires.

Exactly. It's funny because that is a very common thing said between Jeep owners about why the Jeeps are good. They don't realize the lack of issues the 4Runners have and have no idea about the difference in quality between the two vehicles. Excuse their ignorance...they just haven't experienced both.

My 2001 4Runner with 120K on the clock drives 10x better and quieter than my last XJ which was a 1999 with 105K.

Bottom line, there's just a difference in quality (favor 4R) that cannot be argued against. Anyone who tries...well...:rockthrow:

This was actually very entertaining to read. I found it funny how they cracked a comment on runner owners not being able to speak English, yet the way some of them talk was almost unreadable.
I was pleasantly surprised actually to see so many of them for Toyota.

It was also funny how they kept saying the Toyota 4 banger is gutless and the 3.slow is gutless... I suppose they forgot about the current Toyota motors??!!

The Jeep 4.0 is a reliable motor, however everything else in the vehicle breaks often. I will also say that the Jeeps are pretty underpowered. I remember long slow hills back east with my Jeeps, oh man that was painful.

Now the new Pentastar v6 seems pretty bad a$$... I am looking forward to seeing how it does... too bad the Cherokee was dropped and the Grand Cherokee is now a unibody grocery getter...

I noticed that too! The guy who went off on Toyota fans not being able to speak English definitely typed like a backwoods hick, you could almost hear his toothless accent just by reading his post. I was happy to see him put in his place! A lot of those guys had some good and fair insight though.

.

I would have to disagree on two points...not sure which Jeep you had, but the 4.0L XJ Cherokee (for its time) was 'over powered' compared to other SUVs. In fact, it was one of the quickest compact SUVs for a long while. ~180-190HP, 225lb torque in a vehicle that weight just at 3500lbs.

Also, the 4.0L XJs had the Aisin AW4 (Toyota) transmission which is quiet rugged if proper maintenance is done.

Overall, not as reliable as a Toyota, but plenty tough...I love my '05 4runner, but sometimes my '00 XJ (~210,000 miles) is more fun to toss around...it is lighter and more nimble...and with that solid front axle...I'm not afraid to run over just about anything.

I don't hate Jeeps and nor do I know much about them. I personally like the look of the wranglers, Cherokees not so much just cause they're not an eye catcher to me.
To each their own though. It'll be a battle that never dies cause people have their favorites and become very brand loyal.
I see many cars/trucks/SUVs that I like but personally if it's not a Toyota I wouldn't consider buying it, and that's only because I'm loyal to the brand....
I take that back, if I were offered a Porsche 911 I'd be all over it!

I don't hate Jeeps. I do hate unions... and so I don't like wasting money and want the very best as far as reliability is concerned.

I don't get what all the bashing is about, i love XJ's and in many ways they can be almost as reliable as a 4runner, 4.0 5 speed is a bulletproof combo, much like the 3.4 and R series 5 speed. Both suffer from rust, and both are from an era when SUV's were really SUV's. I like cars from the big 3 (offroad/ulitily SUV companies) which are Toyota, Land Rover and Jeep, and think you would be hard pressed to say one is better than another overall, because they all have their pros and they all have their cons, all of them made unreliable models and motors and all of them made some great ones, and they ALL rust to hell...

Wondered how many of them know that the Cherokee (XJ) was designed in Europe...when Renault owned AMC and that the 4sp auto is a 'toyota' unit???

I too, found this thread an entertaining read...My parents had a Grand Cherokee and had nothing but problems with it...ended up getting rid of it within a couple years and taking a big loss...I drove a Wrangler right out of high school and demolished the rear end on a little sand hill in a gravel pit, got pulled home listening to what sounded like glass in a blender...A year later I bought my first toy with the 22r 5'' lift and 35''s, welded rear, geared and some other mods...I sold it with 220k when I had my first child because it wasnt economical but it never failed me, never left me stranded and never got stuck...I ran the piss out of that thing and (shame on me) hardly maintenanced it...Ive had quite a few trucks and suv's since then and never had as good of luck as I did with the toys...So now I have 3...To each their own, some vehicles work better for some then others...Toys just work for me...

I do like how they posted a link to a Pirates thread and complimented on the nice toyotas hahaha that was awesome...

I have an offroading date this sunday with a rubicon so we will see how this plays out...pictures to come...
