super newb question..why does everyone rremove their running boards?

i like mine and i'll like them more once the plastic strips are dyed black again.

is there a functional reason for this or purely aesthetic?

If you do a lot of offroading, they are damage multipliers plus we take them off for more clearance. Also many people remove them to add rock sliders. If you don't do any offroading, it's mainly for looks.

I removed my runningboards for clearance reasons. Also, like Downpour stated, if I'm wheeling, I don't want those on. They will get raped on a decent trail.
My girlfriend wishes I had my runningboards. Everyone makes the joke that they need parachutes to get out.. Its not that tall.

I took mine off for looks, I don't wheel hardcore, but I hate the way the running boards look. I'll be getting a 2nd T4R for my wife hopefully by the end of the year, I am going to leave hers totally stock, which includes leaving the running boards.

i went offroading in utah a few years back and came down in a weird way and a boulder wedged in my rear passenger wheel well and just about ripped off the fender flare completely.

now i'm trying to wrack my brain to think if having the running board attached contributed to that.

I have pulled mine off of every vehicle I have ever owned. Not because I was on super hard trails, not because it looks a little higher without them, and not because they hold crap.

No sir, I took mine off because I drive so fast that I get too much lift. At one point I glided nearly 30 miles across NM.

I had removed them but put them back on. I like my running boards . It makes getting in and out of it so easy. It also looks great.

I was forced to remove mine at gunpoint. That was the nicest hostile gesture anyone's ever done for me.

What scares me is that so many people have them to begin with.

I will be removing mine for family safety and overall vehicle protection by adding sliders.

Here is a list of pros:
1. Sliders can be used for easier entry/exit in your 4runner.
2. Will protect against off road obstacles.
3. You can use a jack on a slider.
4. Since the T4R lacks side impact air bags a slider can add protection. Used this one on my wife:wink2:
5. Your friends will think you are a God and they will quit planing an intervention to help with running board removal.
6. Someone mentioned running boards help with door dings. Just think of the look on the jackwagon's face when he flings his door into your nice steel slider. Priceless, almost a good enough reason alone to ditch the boards and go with sliders!
7. They look good.
8. Improved clearance.
9. You can lock your mountain bike to your sliders/or hook up a slack line in camp for hours of fun.
10. Improves your self esteem. Yes, you're an American Bad Ass and it shows.

If that is not enough reason to ditch the boards the guys on this board will eventually beat you down until you do submit and remove! Lol!

I kept getting my pant legs wet at the calf, from them rubbing on the running board. I also thought they looked better off and almost was a free lift!
