Supercharged 2001 SR5

Hi all! I have been window shopping for 3rd gen TR4 especially a SR5 Sport with rear locker and will be checking one out tomorrow. But I also found a 2001 SR5 with a Toyota supercharger. It has about 120K on it and is about 120 miles away so I cannot check it out until the weekend. I am wondering what the SC does to reliability of the drivetrain. How much HP does it add to the 183 HP stock engine. What does it do to the MPG if anything. Any other cons to having a SC on a stock engine.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I have a 2001 with the black TRD supercharger. It's been stock + stock supercharger it's whole life. Mine has 190k on it, and runs like a top. The only downside that Ive found is that if you don't upgrade the valvebody on the transmission, the 1-2 shift will get loose and start slipping on you. That's if you drive the truck "hard". THe valve body upgrade, which should be done on all supercharged 4runners in my opinion, costs about $500. It's the next thing I'm saving the pennies for.

If you do want to take advantage of the blower and drive it harder, you'll want more than the valve body. You'll want more fuel (URD 7th kit), a smaller pulley, maybe some water/meth injection.


But if you just drive it like a normal truck, the stock supercharger on the stock engine works pretty darn well and shouldn't hurt the reliability of the 5VZ much at all. It only adds about 35hp I believe.

If you're measuring at the crank, than it would be close 70. I just know that most only put down about 210-220whp. You can get more than that...but you need more fuel and more boost.

So either way, whp vs whp or at the crank...you're right, it is probably closer to 70. Stock 4Runner probably makes about 160whp.
