Supercharger parts list and impressions....

So I found a good deal on a 1st gen supercharger with 50k on it and I am rounding up all the other necessary parts. I don't want to spend the money on the 7th injector kit so I would like your guys feedback on what I plan on doing. Also I bought aircabinmans timing belt kit and plan on doing all of that plus the supercharger while i'm taking stuff apart. My 4runner has 232k on it so I'll be doing a compression test to make sure she can handle the charger, if not I may be spending my money elsewhere...

First - I am going to buy a new seal for the nosecone from Rolling Performance(owner says it weeps just behind pulley a tiny bit)

Second - Going to follow a mod on the nosecone that Rockdawg84 did and drill/tap a hole for a plug on the top of the supercharger so it's easy to change the oil in it. Of course I'll refresh the oil in the supercharger as well, start fresh.

Third - Purchased a set of 6 2JZGE 305cc denso injectors for the increase in fuel delivery along with a 190 LPH Walbro fuel pump.

Fourth - Purchase the URD idler dynamic tensioner pulley

Fifth - Purchase 6 denso IRK22 2 step colder plugs to help with pinging

From what research I've done I think that setup should do me well? I live at 4500 ft elevation and most of the pinging I read about happens at or around sea level. I also have a question on the thermostat, the timing belt kit I got comes with the OEM Toyota but I see there is a lower temp one that URD sells. From what I've read I wouldn't need that because it actually gets cold and snows here, is that correct? I'm pretty excited about this whole thing but I want to make sure what I'm planning is going to work and be a reliable setup without going the 7th injector route. I'd love to hear from anyone and everyone with experience and or constructive criticism:becky:

I played this game man... Buy the 7th injector kit. Save yourself all the money I wasted trying to do what you're doing.

Ya I've read all your threads and the amount of tinkering you've done with your supercharger. I'm hoping that this will run fine and tide me over until I pony up for the 7th, if I ever do. I've just seen plenty of people running a charger bone stock with no mods and they say it's fine. I'm gonna give this a whirl and see what happens, just wanted some thoughts from others.

What would you recommend steeze? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a supercharger always in boost? Running rich is better than lean as far as not hurting anything right? Regardless that will be a future upgrade.

Depends on how rich. If its running pretty rich you will get horrible gas mileage, burn up the CAT, foul plugs, and over time will cause carbon buildup.

No, a Supercharger is not always in boost. I hardly ever enter boost with normal daily driving.

There are a lot of products out there for fual management, all of which are spendy.

URD has one that I used...
Here

Apexi also has one that I used... Here

SplitSecond has a BUNCH of products that Mike, the owner, would gladly talk your ear off about. Here (I used the ESC1 paired with the SAFC and TMC1)

AEM has their standalone kits...

And a few other guys have things that I have no experience with.

Noticed the price though - all around $450.

How much are your new injectors? $150ish?
Plugs? $60 ish?
Fuel pump? $120ish?

So now we're at about $750ish if everything is with free shipping, and rather cheap.

Trust me when I say the difference in reliability and DRIVEABILITY is worth the extra $145 for the 7th Injector Kit.

I am not going to comment in here anymore, this is your choice. I just want you to know what I did when I went this route. Thank God I saw the light that is the 7th Injector. I was ready to sell my Supercharger.

Alex, thank you again for the comments, I've read what you went through and you've talked me into the 7th. I'm buying the charger today and I'll save my money to buy the 7th later. I'm going to tackle this in a month or two when I do my timing belt kit, just do it all at once. I'm not looking for crazy boost out of this thing but because I'm at 4500 ft elevation should I use the 2.2 pulley or stick with the stock 2.37?

Honestly, I think that's a great choice man. I am glad I could sway you. Mine was SUCH a headache before the 7th.

I think the 2.2 would be a good option once you have that 7th installed. You could probably get away with it now at that elevation, but that's $100 you could put toward your 7th injector kit =p

Happy boosting, my friend. :frog:

So I just did a quick at home compression test and this is what I came out with.

Cylinder 1 - 150
Cylinder 2 - 150
Cylinder 3 - 160
Cylinder 4 - 165
Cylinder 5 - 170
Cylinder 6 - 150

Are these good enough numbers to throw a charger on with 232k on the motor? My goal is to boost and hopefully the motor will last to 300k or more, then I'll either have it rebuilt or put a JDM motor in. Also would it be ok to run the charger without fuel mods for a month or so? At my elevation I wouldn't be getting as much boost with the stock pulley, or should I put the 2.2 on?

Any feedback would be lovely before I go buy this charger, I meet him in 3 hours so I'd love to know what you guys think. Thank you in advance!

Get the 7th injector kit and the 2.2 pulley. Only thing you'll regret is not doing it sooner.
If your lucky the dude on yotatech still has his for sale on the classified.
You can wide band tune or scan gauge as both were close to accurate.

If your worried you can send it to one of the rebuilders there is Magnuson and I forget the other one if you do a quick search. Prior to instal while you get the other parts.

I had a 1st gen charger on my 99 taco with 200k and the engine could take it just fine. My issue was I didn't have the 7th injector, I lived at 9,300 ft and ping on hills was horrible!! I would just loose almost all power under full boost when i was in a lower rpm and it sounded like metal fan blades hitting each other. Do the 7th injector for sure!!! I also got 12mpg in the winter because the air/fuel was so far off without any fuel mods. With that said, in good conditions and easing on the throttle the power was a huge difference over stock.

So I bought it, put it on last night. Took me about 5-6 hours by myself in my garage. I put in the Denso IK22 plugs, changed all drive belts, new charger belt, new charger oil. Run's really good, I have heard very little pinging at all, easy to drive around that with a 5 speed. I had 2-3 gallons of old 87 gas in it so I put some octane booster and filled it with 91 premium, runs better now than it did driving to the gas station. I do have a tiny tiny bit of oil seepage behind the pulley. Does that mean I should put a new seal in the nose? There was absolutely no play at all in the nose bearing. Plan is to have the 7th injector on in a month or two and just not drive like a retard until then. Also should I put the cooler thermostat in or stay with the OEM?

There is very little oil in that supercharger amigo, if ANY is leaking, to me that's an issue. I'd seal it up.

For what it's worth, I run the stock thermostat. When it goes, I'll probably throw a TRD in there. I like TRD things.

Do I have to remove the supercharger to take the pulley off? I'd like to just pull it off and inspect but it spins, how do I take it off while it's on the vehicle, if possible?

Anyone? I've searched these and other forums and nobody has a write up or how-to. The only things I've found is people servicing their nose cones and taking the pulley off once the nose cone is off. Do I really have to remove the charger to take off the pulley?

I changed my pulley with the charger on the truck. You will need an impact that can hopefully spin fast enough to spin the nut free since the pulley will spin on the belt.

I ended up having to use a torch to heat it up enough to get it off. Then the pulley will pull off, put the new one on and then tighten it back up.
