Supercharger question

My esteemed colleagues,

I want a supercharger.

I know, I know....its more practical to get the V8. It's a waste of money at the 200,000 miles. I'm a dumbass, what can I say?

My question isn't should I. I have my reasons (centimental and wife wont let me get a V8)

My question is how long will the motor last? I have personally taken what I would consider exceptional care of it. At 190,000 I had every fluid replaced sans the transmission.

If I put a system on, (URD/Rotorex centrifugal) what life would I have left? 50,000? 100,000? 200,000? I do plan on keeping this truck a while. I've grown rather attached to the thing.

I plan on also installing a new timing chain, valve body upgrade for the transmission, and aftermarket trans cooler.

I want this because it shifts a lot towing my boat and I mean, come on...350+RWHP.

The rep for URD said their mule was a 190,000 mile 4Runner. So I'm not worried about will it work, just how long before my motor tells me "no".

Thanks guys and gals.

You sound like me from last year… similar situation, similar mileage, and a truck with some family history.

Having driven in a stock tuned supercharged V6 I could tell there was extra power but it wasn't a mind blowing difference... it certainly made me question the "worth it" factor considering the 10k price tag…

Plenty of reading to do on this topic... installed costs vary, and the "stock" SC configuration is a bit weak. You can mod it and get some more boost, but my concern has to do with tuning. Considering the Toyota ECU is really locked down, I would talk to some experienced shops to see what your best route is.

On top of that… a well-worn motor… I know it’s got chops, but at this point, adding forced induction without considering an internals refresh might not be the best route. Really depends on the resources you have on hand. I have 200k on the clock as well… I decided to leave well enough alone because I couldn’t REALLY support the cost to do it right.

I had a TRD supercharger with smaller pulley on my 07 FJ. Same 4.0L motor. Ran great. Zero issues during time of ownership. URD is probably no different in terms of impact on internals. Maintain it properly, run a conservative 5-7 lbs of boost and I wouldn’t necessarily be concerned about longevity.

As Bumbo stated, make absolutely sure you want to pursue it. As 10k is a big chunk of change to have buyers remorse after.

I cannot attest to running on a 4th gen 4runner, but my 96 T100 is super charged with a 1st gen TRD SC. We put it on at about 65K and the truck is currently sitting in my garage at a bit over 200K miles. Currently it needs to have the bank 1 sensor replaced, plus a few other things. The biggest issue with mine has been the lean air/fuel mixture caused by SC and the inability of the ECU to compensate. Maybe different with the 4runners but I don’t see any ECU tuning kits out there, maybe there are. The other thing to consider is the added stress put on the transmission, rear end, etc.

Saying all of that, our T100 is a blast to drive and blows my V8 4runner out of the water for acceleration and pulling power. It pulls our fully loaded utility trailer over the mountain passes easily accelerating and passing with ease, the 4runner not so much. Playing on the beach and the sand is a kick, the fun factor is definitely there with the SC.

Long story short, do your research as they are expensive and can be a bit of work to get them to run right.
