supra's successor in 2007??!!

i just read this article on edmunds that toyota will be putting out a two seat roadster, rear wheel drive, by 2007, to fight the nissan 350Z. it'll have the engine from the new, 2006 lexus gs, but bumped up from 3 liters to 3.5 liters, making around 300 horses, or a v8 from the gs too, tuned to 350 horses. base price will start near 30,000, to compete against 350Z. toyota reliability and quality with a lexus v6 or v8....almost as tempting as the 4runner....

Toyota hasn't put out a decent sports car since the Supra. The All-Track was pretty awesome, as well as the MR2 with the turbo. The rest of the Celica's aren't that great and the non-turbo MR2 and the MR-S just suck. I'll never buy another Toyota sports car. I'd rather buy a used Porsche from the 80's or 90's.
 
I think it's funny that all these new engines are considered Lexus engines, like that makes them so much better;): guess it does not matter they are Toyotas 1st then put into Lexus but no one wants to hear hey thats the 4Runner engine or thats the Tundra engine:p

A car to compete with the 350Z would be cool, V6 and V8 configuration would be killer
 
Nah, forget about a new Toyota/Lexus V6 or V8. Put a newer verison of the 2JZ-GTE back in the Supra!!! ;):
 
good point about the toyota/lexus engines, Edge. although, in the case of this yet-to-be toyota roadster, it's gs300/gs430 derived engines are exclusively lexus (or is it only in North America???). the 3 liter engine in the gs300 is not the debored version of the 2005 avalon, which is a derivative of the 4runner engine, but smaller. maybe in Japan, all of these engines are just toyota engines? i'm not sure what the power to weight ration will be, but i'm sure i'll be close to the 350Z. still prefer the 4runner over anything they offer right now though
 
The inline 6 found in the GS300 is the new version of the 2JZ-GTE. Last year someone tried putting in the Supra engine in a GS, and found out the GS's ECU couldn't communicate with the analog eletronics of the older engine.

It would be interesting to see what types of heads are avaialble for the new Supra.

I know several people at Toyota dealerships across the country. There is no definite word on whether it is actually going to make production yet or not.

And for whoever said a V8 would be nice...:bash:

It's actually be done quite a few times.....you definetly gotta swap the Supra ECU at the same time tho. There was an amazing 800+whp GS400 with a full 6 speed/2JZ GTE swap for sale awhile back.....that car was sex.

The same swap into a 90's SC300/400 is popular too. Or just turboing the GE, as the bottom end is still stout as hell :)

As for the next Supra....there have been soooooo many rumours floating for years, but nothing's ever been nailed down. I will believe it when it is sitting in a showroom at a dealer, and not a second sooner. If one does come out, I am very skeptical it will concur the MKIV in terms of an overall revolutionary package with MENTAL power capabilities. They're running fuckin 8 second 1/4's at 167mph in full weight street MKIV's with stock blocks, stock 3.0L's of puny displacment and unopened factory 6 speed tranny's these days.....in a fackin 12 y/o 3,600+lb IRS car!!

If one ever does come out, it will likely be some pussy N/A like the 350Z/G35......no thanks

I would take your 87 Porsche on a ride thru the twisties and I think you would be surprised how much the MR2 Spyder (MR-S is the European badge) does not suck. Have you even driven one?
And don't get me started on a 2ZZ swap with a turbo on it in a 2000 lbs. car.
whats the 911 HP/to wieght ratio?

For the money/ stock nothing beats them and if you do some mods look out.:D

I humbly disagree about the non-turbo mr2. As an owner, my 91 NA hauls. Its not the fastest in a straight line, but in the corners...not much can beat it. We have a slight weight advantage over the turbocharged mr2s. Its the best handling car i've ever driven.
