Im new to this whole Toyota and forum thing so be patient. I recently purchased an 88 and had the motor replaced. Everything feels fine with the exception of the unit seems to run run slow or very sluggish in first gear into second, but once into top of second gear into third it runs great. There is no problem at idle or in reverse. From time to time there is a pop sound when changing gears from first to second only, which Im assuming is an exhaust leak of sorts. Love the unit and am eager to have it running better soon.

Does it have a carb or fuel injection? If it has a carb I would expect that or problems with the emission controls or EGR. My '81 pickup had such a big spring on the carb throttle linkage that I couldn't press the gas pedal down all the way and I had to remove that to make it run properly then the stock carb went bad so I replaced it with a Weber, now it runs better than it did when new. Also it starts easier and is a lot faster after redoing the emission controls.

We need more info. What motor? What tranny?

You should also post this in the classic section where it belongs. There are a lot of smart peeps there that could help you out.

Yup, post in Classics, more folks will see it there. And let us know what motor, what transmission, what size tires and what gear ratio you're running. ;)
