surging forward when at stop

My 04 V8 surges forward and the tach rises and falls when at stop. The surging is unsafe as you really need to put the brakes on heavily so that it does not creep up on you. Now that my kids are driving it occasionally it is more of a concern for me. I received a recall card in the mail a few months ago about a ECU fix and am thinking it may be related? I am going to bring it into the dealer tomorrow and see if this is related to the recall. Just wondering if anyone else has similar issues? I searched forum on this and found a few people with similar caes but the dealer just shrugged them off.

My truck does the same thing. Its apparently normal from the threads I've read. I just keep a firm foot on the brake pedal so I don't accidentally bump the guy in front of me.

As stated, more than likely the A/C...

Could you post that recall number? I haven't heard anything about the ECUs...
 
Mine does the same thing with the A/C on. It's very annoying that a V8 needs to raise RPM a few seconds after a complete stop for A/C. Not only that but it cycles with a raise then back to normal and raises it again if you're sitting longer. Every other car I've owned from 4cyl to other v8's don't do this.

You consciously need to press the pedal harder. When you come to a smooth stop that previous pressure isn't enough to hold the rise in rpm later on. This is my single most annoying peeve on this v8 because it's a accident waiting to happen :mad2:
 
thanks for the replies, kind of reassuring I am not alone, I called the dealer and they mentioned three recalls and when she said something about the ECU I told her thats the one. She said bring it in so I am still going to have them do whatever under the recall. I will try to get the number. The card I received in the mail that I though was a recall was actually a class action suit for cars with electronic throttle control systems (ETCS). This is for certain cars with ETCS that experience unintended acceleration. Did anyone else receive a card in the mail a few months ago?

My '04 doesn't have electronic throttle, right? So this recall you speak of must be for 05-09 I assume.

But yes, like the others when my A/C is on, the truck is very hard to hold at a stand still. If it was a V6 it wouldn't be a problem. But these V8s make so much torque below 2,000 that any change in idle is noticeable.

My 03 has it so I would say you have it too. Go look at your throttle body, is there a cable coming off it?
 
I have noticed when I go to drive thrus that when I stop my truck makes a loud rattling noise and acts like because I'm pressing the brake so hard to keep it from rolling that its getting bogged down really bad. So I normally just slip it on neutral where the rattling goes away and the bogging

Make sure they don't cut your gas pedal :yuck:
 
they already replaced or cut the pedal before I bought it. If I didnt see it in the service history, I would have never known. I dont see what the big deal about that is anyways. I got the truck back from the dealer today and they said there were no recalls on this vehicle to date, so they did not do anything other than change the oil which was due. I had them replace the rear wiper, back tail light bulb, rotate tires, and grease the drive train. A whopping 86 bucks but at least I got to see what my local Toyota dealership is like. I do like the free shuttle to work and pick me up convenience. I didnt even bother to tell them about the surge since everyone here says its normal.

I had this issue with mine too. I filed a complaint with Toyota. I threatened to sue the dealership. Then I got high and forgot about it. I wondered whether there was a way to fix that too. IDK...
I would be interested if there were a recall for that issue.
 
Has anyone that has had their pedal modified notices a decrease in power? It just seems like I don't have as much get up and go now. Maybe it's in my head but idk seems legit
