Is there a way to adjust the stiffness of the suspension on the 4Runner? I've got a 2004 SE 4.7l V8 with XREAS

Do you mean adjust the existing suspension without replacing it?

If yes, then I don't believe there is any way of stiffening up the suspension eg like turning torsion bars.

However, you could obviously change the shocks and coils to another brand. There are several choices now of spring rates that will definitely stiffen your ride depending upon how far/what purpose you have in mind. Likewise there are several alternative shocks that provide different dampening rates/characteristics.

You can get rid of the XREAS system if it's too stiff for you. You can then get standard non-XREAS OEM shocks or get Monroe shocks. These shocks should provide a softer ride.

But before doing all this, i would make sure that your tire pressure is correct.

I was driving in my friends LX470 today and noticed his car had adjustable ride height, low n and high, and also controllable stiffness of the suspension. What is that, the KDSS for the ride height? I had just never heard about the adjustment of the stuffness of shocks before.

Nope, not KDSS. KDSS involves the anti-roll bars and is available only on GX470. LX470 has shock absorbers that are electronically controlled. It's a unique system. Unlike other "air" suspension, the springs are normal springs just like in any other vehicle. Everything (ride stiffness and height) is controlled via the shocks. This system is surprisingly reliable considering the stress and complication of the shocks.

BTW, the STIFF setting is kinda useless...it increaes stiffness without improving much in handling. So, my brother always sets it towards the comfort side.
