I think it's a great idea. You should celebrate your wisdom by grabbing a lunchbox locker and throwing it in. Spartans were $250 on Rockauto the last time I checked...

The Spartan is on the list. I think I can buy the OME shocks and tires for about the same as the full OME kit I was planning. I'm hoping I can sell the tires on my truck and that'd give enough for the locker. Just gotta see if I can find someone to help install it, I'm not sure I want to tackle it myself.

I thought detroits were more for heavy fullsize applications? I admit it took a while to learn how to drive with my Grizzly- no taking foot off gas quickly or unexpectedly without a big clunk! It reminds me it's back there tho, lol.. then again it went in same time the gears did so it was like a whole different beast..

Found the Spartans on Rockauto and Amazon for around $300. The V6 models were $255-265 range. Why are the V6 ones cheaper?

It isn't about the truck size, it's about your drivetrain and wheel setup. The Detroit is stronger - big wheels and low gears will tear apart a lunchbox. But you can't just drop a Detroit in either, you have to set your gears up again.
For anything up to a 35", a lunchbox is fine. Especially with Yota motors.

Just when I think I've made up my mind, I start second guessing. About half way completed checkout on a set of 31x10.50's, but just couldn't do it. Got home and put the 285/70/17 Duratracs off my 4runner onto the truck and drove around quite a bit. You can feel them, but I feel it's totally livable. I'm rubbing pretty bad, need to get under there and make some room. Now I'm really thinking about 32x11.50's or 33x10.50's (the 33's are several pounds lighter).

After thinking on this some more and a little more testing, I've realized there's no way to fit 33's with the wheels that came on the truck. The backspacing is just too far from stock (3"). Looks like I'm sticking with 31x10.50's, which isn't a big deal because the tire I wanted only comes in that size.

First off, thanks for all the input you all have given. I got my new tires, 31x10.50 Mickey Thompson MTZ's, mounted up today. I'm planning to sell the tires that were on the truck and use that to fund OME shocks all around. I'll see how that goes and hopefully add the rest of the OME kit piece by piece. After that will come the rear locker (thinking I'll leave the front open), but this is probably a ways down the road. I think this will be plenty capable for the stuff I'll encounter, but we'll see how that goes.
