Suspension (clunk)

I recently purchased a 04 V6 Limited with 81k miles. The truck drives very tight and strong. However I do hear subtle clunking when going over an irregular surface. My guess is bushings. Does anyone have any other suggestions what may be the cause?

Also I am interestedin bilstein struts, nothing too extreme or adjustable. Any recommendations?

Welcome to T4R!, typically clunk sounds coming from the front have been deemed sway bar end link ball joints. replacing these and suspension bushings certainly smooth things out. Also the driveshafts have to be greased regularly they can cause clunk noises as well if not lubricated regularly

can't go wrong with bilsteins; however, be sure to check out the sticky threads at the top of the 4th gen section, theres one directed specifically towards shocks, springs, struts, and coil overs. you can get a lot of info there.

Also theres a members build thread sticky you can search through different members pictures to get ideas on stance and looks of each modifications they've made.
 
just the bushings and the end links. the sway bar itself is good for life unless you hit something and bend it i suppose
 
I would also suggest checking all your bolts for tightness on all the rear suspension links. My rear panhard bar had a bolt that was about a full turn loose causing a clunk when going over bumps. I could rattle it when I grabbed it and tried to move it around.
 
Had the exact same issue, changed the bushings (2) for $16 (toyota dealer price) and the noise is gone. Start with the bushings as they are much cheaper than the end links. If noise is still there, then look at end links.
 
I am having the same issue with my 04 sr5 92k. I cannot locate the noise. I have had it off the ground and tried to shake and move everything I can see. I cannot reproduce the noise. I will check the end link bushings. On my 3rd gen when the end links went bad I got a squeaking not a thunk. Thanks for the heads up.
 
I couldn't replicate the noise either. It's the body bushing that you should check, not the end link bushing. Like I said, it's cheap and very easy to fix and it can't hurt to replace anyways so you might as well start there. The end link bushing you are talking about it harder to fix and more expensive.
 
I have same clunk coming from front. It only happens when going over smaller bumps and not the bigger ones. It also doesn't clunk when driving over speed bump. Do you guys have a picture of mentioned bushings? I would like to do it myself but crawling under truck and checking everything I cannot replicate the sound

When under your truck you'll see a bar going from wheel to wheel. That is your swaybar. The only place that it attaches to the body of the truck is where you'll find the bushing that is likely causing the noise.

It is held in place by 2 bolts and a u-clamp and will take you 30 minutes to replace both.
 
Oh so you are just talking about the sway bar bushings. I already had those replaced and that didn't fix the noise. I've had several different mechanics try to find it and none have been able to do so.
 
Finally got around to taking care of this issue on my 04. $13.99 for new bushings at my local parts store and about a half hour of my time. Problem solved. Thanks to everyone for the info.:hatsoff:
