Suspension replacement?

What you all are experiencing has nothing to do with shocks, your springs have sagged and you slam the bump stops when you hit a bump in the road.

Part of the reason for having a lift is so that when you hit a bump, the suspension can move up more before harshly bottoming out. take a look under your truck and see how close the bump stops are to bottoming out, on my truck with a 3" or so lift, I never hit the bump stops any more when driving around town, even offroad, id have to jump it to make it bottom out, because it has so much more up travel.

I recommend getting either the 99 talls or the yy yb trd tundra springs and setting them on the bottom perch for the front, in the back either 99 tall springs or fj springs to give a mild lift.

good luck!

I've had a '98 4Runner 5spd for almost a year now and looking to do a suspension upgrade.

I often carry a bunch of people and their paragliding gear up logging roads so need something beefier than stock.

After some research, it seems Old Man Emu coil springs and Bilstean 5100 shocks and struts are the way to go. However, I'm not sure how heavy of springs I should get and if I should also consider lifting it.

I would prefer no lift kit, but would like to get the biggest tires I can with the above setup.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Look at OME 906 rear springs, and whatever the spring experts match to 906's for the front. You should get a bit of a lift empty that will largely disappear when fully loaded.

I was looking into the OME/ Bilstein 5100 series combination. But the market is flooded with brand new or Nearly New 5th gen 4Runner take off coilovers and Springs. I got some rear springs from a guy for free and I paid 50 bucks for front coilovers and I'll just give the 5th gen shocks away. From what I understand I will end up realizing about a 2 inch lift and drastically improved ride and handling characteristics. Be careful if you go with OME, pay close attention to the numbers because I see a lot of harldy used OME springs on the market. I want to say the combination that I figured out was 906's and 880's. But I went with the 5th gen Springs and saved like 350 bucks or whatever.

Bilstein 6112

I'm New to 4runners and I just got a 2005 4wd v6 4runner sr5. I'm wanting to lift it 2.5 to 3in. And am wanting to use Bilstein 6112s. I plan on adding a 113lbs front bumper and winch. And don't know what coils to use. If I lift it 2.5in the front, I also want to lift it 2.5in in the back, Not a Level. I do plan
on using aftermarket control arms. Just curious what you guys think.

Probably get better responses in the 4th gen forum. This is the 3rd gen section [ 1996 thru 2002] :)

reviving the timeless discussion of what folks are using to replace/refresh their suspension in 2023?

in particular after some quick glances at places like Camelback and other online OEM sources looks like certain OEM components in general for the 3rd Gen are starting to become discontinued which is a bummer but i get it 25+ years and counting now... including springs which makes sourcing stuff like the infamous 99' talls even more difficult to locate.

anyone else with a street queen like my 3RZ update their ride recently?

for shocks/struts without looking for a lift, seems like the primary options are Billys (4600's or 5100's), KYB Gas Adjusts, OEM, unless you go standard auto parts shop brands ie, Monroes, Ranchos, etc...

for springs, with OEM's now looking increasing unavailable or hard to find its Moog and... well... not much. ARB/OME but i know they ride stiff...

am i missing anything?

If you want OEM, here is where I buy my parts from:

1999 Toyota 4Runner Parts - ToyotaPartsDeal.com

They have the '99 tall springs and shocks/struts in stock if you want to go that route, as well as other year's parts. Hope this helps.

Any strut replacement for Lowering springs on for 4th Gen 4runner??
