Suspension woes...

OK, I have a 98 4wd. Had OME 881 w/top plate spacer 890s and the original nitro chargers. The ride seemed to get harsher and harsher over time. So, with all the other upgrades I was doing I thought refreshing the suspension would be a good idea. So, with liking the height I decided to replace the shocks and struts. The nitrocharger sports were the "replacement" for the original nitrochargers. Put them on and the thing rode like a brick. So called toytec and was recommended to go with their eibach spring and tacoma 5100s. Got those and the rear was considerably lower than the front. I then put their superflex and 5100s (703) in the rear. I hate the way this thing drives now. Darty, handles like crap, front end feels like it's all over the place the rear feels off too. Changing to the toytec setup lifted the 4runner an inch or so all around, I am using the tacoma 5100s on the bottom setting. After doing weeks of research on here and other forums I have a few questions that I haven't been able to pin down. Being that I liked the ride height with the OME springs better, I would like to put them back on.

For the questions

1. Should I get the tundra 5100s and pair them with the OME 881s or put the 90004s back on (read a few posts saying the rear is what causes the harshness with the OME setup.

2. Would the 5100s I have existing in the rear (703) work well with the 890s or should I go with the new offering from OME 60073 (had the 60028 before)

3. If the tundra 5100s are the better option for the front with the 881s, would the first or second setting equal the height with the OME struts?

Thanks for any help!

Got to thinking about it, I may have the 880s and 906s. I looked at the springs last night, no markings on them though. I ordered them from rocky road several years ago and would have put medium not hd on their site. Which would explain why I liked the ride height better before with the OME springs. I'll try to call rocky road and see if they keep records that far back. Any way to tell otherwise?

881s ride stiff no madder what. I run them with comfort sport shocks and it's not bad. Rear I run lc coils with lc shocks which tighten up the soft coil. I love how my truck rides. You may need stiffer rear shock.

I have the tacoma ones with the eibachs now, the ride is decent (Lil on the soft side) but handles and steers like crap. Would the Tundra 5100s make a significant difference?

You have not said ONE THING about your alignment, did you get it aligned? If so post a pic of the alignment print out sheet.

I've got a '99 4wd and run the 881 up front and 906's in the back. I'll add that I also run them with a toytec 3/4" spacer up front and an OME 10mm trim packer in the back along with air bags (only inflated when loaded).

My first go round had these coils on Tokico Trekmasters (the green ones) and it rode really well. The suspension was stiff but not bad at all. Most of the stiffness I attribute to the shocks more than the springs. I originally had '99 tall coils (stock) that were a bit sagged after 100k miles or so.

Now I have the coils with Tundra 5100's. I still run the spacers and bags but I'm at a height I like without being too high on the front clips. I'm second from the bottom.

The 5100's are softer than the Trekmasters. The fronts just a little but the backs even more. It's not bad and actually a little more comfortable on the road but soft. They are also longer so you might need bump stop adjustments. I just leave the air bags deflated but with a valve core to act as a stop.

Caster is 2.1 camber dead 0 and towed both fronts in. 05. With the ome setup I was at 2. 3 caster. Even confirmed it on another machine just to make sure the one at work was accurate. Plus everything component wise on the suspension is new. So, again... The ONE THING that is wrong are the springs or shocks/struts or a combination of both.

Does the front end feel stable to you? Hadn't really thought about an airbag setup, will have to look into that. The crappy thing is that when I originally put the ome setup on with the original nitrochargers it was awesome. Just running into these issues after I decided to replace the shocks/struts after 6 years and 100k+

Yes, completely stable. I used the air bags because I already had them. I also didn't want a ton of lift. Instead of the 906's you could go with the 890's for a bit more lift than the 906's.

I have the tundra 5100 w eibach and superflex rear w extended bils. Rides great. If your all over you may check inner and outer tie rods and also test the steering rack bushings.

The 881s and 890s are what I have. Will probably just get some tundra 5100s and get rid of the tacoma ones. Not sure if I'll put the Ome Springs back on it not yet. Could the springs settling over time cause harshness?

Jay
Inner and outer TREs are good. Poly bushings in the rack, end links, and lcas. All 4 rear control arms are new as well. May look into addco sway bars too...
Seems like the tacoma 5100s are most likely the culprit here. I read a couple of people say they are soft and saw the soran steel far saying the tacoma ones make it feel like jello. What setting on the Tundra do you have it?

When I was doing my research I found the Tundras were the way to go. At first glance I'd think the Tacomas would be better as they are similar size to a 4Runner whereas a Tundra is bigger and heavier.

I don't think worn coils cause harshness but worn or blown shocks will. In the case of my Trekmasters one of the front shocks actually locked up in the extended position and that created some harshness (read:alot).

The Tundra 5100's got popular at a time they were being run with the Tundra coils. Now people put whatever coil on, like myself, and it works fine. Sonoran Steel was the one pimping the Tundra/Tundra combo. Now that Tundra coils are hard to come by, especially without paying $$$ you see different combos.

That sounds like what happened to my original nitrochargers... Funny thing is the new "sport" that I replaced them in with were WORSE! I could accurately tell you where the cracks and pebbles were in the pavement... It was actually to stiff to handle well top, would just deflect on pavement irregularities

Thread revisit.

Ended up gettin the Tundra Bilsteins up front and using them with my OME coils and in the rear putting the OME coils back on. Initially had the Bilsteins on the rear too. However with the rear Bils being long travel and the OME coils back on there wasn't much travel before they bottomed out, and if I picked the back end up the springs would come out of their perches. I can only imagine the suck of that happening over a railroad track or when playing offroad. Put the Nitrocharger sport 60073 (soft valving) last night. It's quite a bit stiffer than the bils. Front Tundra Bils/OME combo is perfect though. The whole Toytec setup will be for sale after I clean them up today btw.

Anyone have any clue as to if they will break in and get softer? If so, what's your experience on how long?

Interesting... I was complaining about my stiff ride (OME 881/890) with OME shocks all around... and 60028 in the rear. I swapped my OME shocks for Bilstein 5125s out back and it made a world of difference. It is almost "too soft", but wolds better around town and on the trail. On the highway it can get a little soft on bigger bumps etc.

I had thought about trying the "new" 60073s but was concerned that they would also be way too stiff.

The fronts are perfect now. The bils on the rear were a bit too soft. OME 60028 was ridiculously harsh. The 60073 are stiff but not as bad as the 60028. Hoping the soften up a bit though...

Anyone had any experience with the 60073s?

05SVRACER, what perch did you setup your Tunda 5100s on? And you are using 881s and 890s right?
