Sway bar help in middle of project as this is typed

Short story changing buskings on front sway bar.


One bolt was seized even after soaking in pb and heated it wasnt moving

then it started to move and the dam head snapped off.

While removing the stud with an extractor it got loose and fell out with the stud thats when i noticed the thread inside the frame was gone was gone.

So now the 14mm bolt that screwed inside doesn't since any thread it could grab is gone and the hole is a bit wider

A nightmare but i assume this wont be since the biggest issue is removed

So suggestions please since im in garage tooling on other things that need to be replaced

Unless I am misunderstanding what you are asking, why not Just drill and tap the hole? Get a bigger bolt if needed.

that thought crossed my mind but the frame the sway bar attaches to is what 1/4 thick if that seems something was mounted above the hole with threads to hold that bolt which is now gone. so if I tap the frame hole it would only have maybe 2 threads thats why im asking if pictures are needed i can throw two up show the difference

Ok. I get what you are saying. You could use a nutsert/nut insert if you don't have enough metal to get good contact for the threads.

Or you just throw your front bar in the trash.

Never even heard of that is that the proper name? idea where to get them.

BTW that dam skid plate is a SOB thank god heat took care the bolts like nothing

Nutsert: eBay Motors | eBay

When you install them they compress to support themselves on the metal. Have nice threads built in. I have used them over the years for all kinds of things.

Took both my sway bars out. No issues. Took a couple days to get used to the minor extra body roll, but still does everything it did before

I used fishing line to pull a carriage bolt through. The square part grabbed the frame and holds it tight. Wokred great.

thanks for for the responses

inner tie rods replaced outters replaces the front and rear sway bar bushings down. I love it is super quiet again going of bumps.

Unfortunately i won't remove the sway bars with as hard/fast as we drive/corner these trucks for work especially at high speeds Ill keep the extra support up next the shocks please tell me thats easier than what i just went thru

I would use a Nut-Insert, they work well and I used them recently to fix stripped out skidplate nuts in my frame for my new RCI skidplates. Just make sure you buy the correct drill for the nut-insert and use the proper installation tool (you can find how to make your own with nuts, old washers, and a bolt online)
