I see pics of the 5 Speed donor and I think "Hey, I've seen that 4 runner before"... I've been trolling local craigslist for weeks looking for my first 4runner lol...

Haha that's funny! That's how I found my 97' and this 96' donor, both on Craigslist. Keep your eyes open you'll find a good one!

I'm still super confused on wiring. That's basically all that's holding me up right now.

I will be installing my lift, Tundra 231mm brakes, LandCruiser wheels and 5 speed trans!


You don't need a rear brake line extension. What I did was take some long/big pliers and grabbed the top of the bracket that the line attaches to the frame at it's vertical position and bent it down to about a 45-30 degree angle from horizontal. I've done a full 90 deg from vertical bracket bent to horizontal and it might be a bit much. Just experiment with it.

That's just the too bracket for the rear brake line above the diff. As for installing the lift. Also unclip your wheel speed sensor wires. You don't want to stretch them and break them while moving the axle down to stuff the springs in. There are ether 2 or 3 clips that are attached to the trac bars on both sides.
Then when done I only clipped 2 back in and skipped one so it has some play in the line. And under full droop it will not got stretched.

When installing the rear springs use the factory jack in between the bump stop and axle. Crank the jack open to push them apart. Check my build thread on like page 5 for a picture.

I took a look at your build thread, good stuff in there.

Thanks for the tips! This isn't my first time lifting a linked vehicle (read Pathfinder), but I do appreciate all the little tips and tricks that will make this go smoother.
 
Marlin clutch kit finally got back in stock and it's on its way to me!

I finished the front lift (Bilstein 5100 and Toytec coil) and put on the wheels and tires (265/75/R16 BFG All-Terrain and Tacoma 5 spoke wheels). Tires come dangerously close to hitting the upper control arm so I'm gonna swap the FN Wheels from my Tacoma to my 4Runner and see if the different backspacing will help clearance the upper control arm. I really don't want to have to buy a set of aftermarket upper control arms.

Got the coils in (FJ80 coils). This thing is gonna be tall! Rear Bilstein 5100's are on the way!
 
Looking good man. Will be interested to hear the thoughts on the clutch. Will need a new one sometime in the not so distant future... In the home stretch now.
 
Transmission is in!

All that is left to do now is the hydraulics and driveshafts.

I had to swap the 4wd shifter around because it was hitting the 5 speed shifter in 2nd/4th and reverse. No big deal just a clip and it pops out.

Before removing the A/T ECU I wanted to make sure that it would run. Fired her up, got 10 codes... Oh boy...

I got your typical shift solenoid codes and about 6 or 7 engine missfire codes. Turns out I forgot to plug in a line to the charcoal canister....whoops. Oh well, easy fix!

Reverse lights work, and the vehicle will NOT start until the clutch is depressed, just like factory.


Went to plug in the manual trans ECU, no dice, the manual trans ECU has completely different plugs than the auto trans ECU. Oh well, guess I'll just have to live with a CEL, either that or swap wiring harnesses (kicking myself now for not grabbing the harness out of the 96' parts 4Runner).

I attempted to engage 4wd by hitting the button and shifting into 4low but no lights came on the dash. I think maybe because the driveshaft is disconnected the front diff cannot activate 4x4? I'm not sure.

Driveshaft connection wouldnt make a difference. Hmm this is where you may have to go it alone. My case was a manual and therefore very easy. I dont recall you mentioning that yours was an electric shift model before.

No i'm referring to the engine ECU, i'm just calling them auto ECU or manual ECU to distinguish between the 2, I don't actually mean the trans ECU.

Of course. Wasn't thinking when I read that.

This still doesnt sound right. Let me look at mine this evening. I have a manual ECU from both a 4runner and a Tacoma. I am almost positive that both have 3 rows of pins.

Where did you get the ECU from? Is this the one out of the 1996? I have a hard time believing that it has something to do with the limited trim level, but I could be wrong. It more than likely has to do with the model year, 1996.

Ah - if you still have the manual shift, I would recommend putting that in as much of a pain as that might be. Those electric shift cases rely on a solenoid to engage. More electric items to screw up. If you keep the electric case, you may check over on ttora for some threads on the matter. Those cases were fairly common in Tacomas as well, and I think I read a thread or two on it back when I did my swap.
