Switching from a RR to a 4Runner

Great forum that you have here.

I am seriously considering ditching my 2002 Range Rover for a new 4runner. Right now I have two deals on the table and I'd like some advise:

Offer #1: 2006 4Runner Sport v8, 4WD, 4,000 miles, 1 year into warranty = $27,000

Offer #2: 2007 4Runner Sport v6, 4WD, brand new = $31,000

I don't really need the v8, but it would be nice to have. Further compounding the decision is the attractive financing currently being offered by Toyota on new vehicles.

Were there any significant changes from 2006 to 2007?

Nope, no significant changes.

To me? This is a no-brainer. The V8 for less money and still over 30,000 miles on warranty? I'd be all over that thing. I have a hunch you could extend that warrany a little and still be less than the V6 overall. The 6 is nice, don't get me wrong.
 
I'd say get the V8 and try to get the price a little lower. Also you can buy the Toyota warranty from Shaun (search warranty thread) for CHEAP (7yr/100k, no deductable for like $800 to $900 and they get cheaper if you want less coverage like 7/75)

Also get your own quote for financing, don't assume you are going to get the best deal from Toyota because many times you can get it cheaper somewhere else.

Thank you all for the feedback. My dilemma is that with the special financing from Toyota on new vehicles (2.9%), the payment is not that much greater for the brand new truck. Therefore this ultimately boils down to a discussion of v6 vs. v8.

Does $27k seem like a good deal for a 2006 SE, v8, 4WD? I've checked edmunds, KBB and Nada and there isn't a conclusive response.

Similar payment doesn't mean you spend the same. Calculate your total outlay (including the cost of money) and then decide.

If you are really that sensitive to the payment, make sure you want this type of vehicle - an suv that could increase in variable costs with changing gas prices and so forth.

As far as v6 v. v8 is concerned... it's never really come up!

If the money is not an issue, make a new option and get a new v8! the only thing you 'loose' in the ability to be in 2wd.

If in fact it turns out the end cost is about the same because of the lower new vehicle interest rate incentives then I think I'd personally lean towards the brand new 4Runner - unless you have to have the v8 for extra towing capacity, etc. I would only be tempted to get the used one if it was gonna be a substantial savings.

I bought my new, loaded 2003 SE for $29,400. See if you can get the invoice price or lower on a NEW V8 and then you will also get the 2.9% financing. Most likely you could get a new V8 for just a couple of hundred dollars more than the V6.

Good thought. I could get the price closer to 29k if I applied to rebate. However, I'd opt for the better financing instead.

Heck with the money I will be saving on maintenance bills on the Rover, I 'll be net ahead either way.
 
I would go with the new truck for a few grand more. The V6 has plenty of power. The only thing is would you miss having the V8 since your current RR has it?
 
I would go with the v6. Better gas mileage as well as cheaper to purchase. The 4R is no sports car so its not even worth getting the v8. If you want a fast truck get the trailblazer ss.:awais:
 
I like NEW over used. I don't want to wear other people's underwear, even if it's been thru the washing machine!:D Or would you buy a used mattress??:p

With gas prices going up, i would haggle to death with the dealer to get a cheap NEW V8 model.
 
There's something unsettling about buying a used car, at least to me anyway. Even though 4,000 miles isn't a lot, it'll leave me wondering how the vehicle was treated during those miles.

Buy new, V6 or V8,

I seem to remember where someone here took their new t4r in for an oil change and service and left without oil in the pan, engine blew, and dealer only did a shortblock replacement, then they had numerous problems. I'm sure if they traded it in, the dealer would be able to produce full maintenance receipts.

While it may still have warranty, you will be the one without a ride waiting for repairs.

Only 2 reasons I can think of as to why a person gets rid of a car with only 4000 miles on it, they really don't like it, or, they have had numerous problems, either way I don't think they would tell a prospective buyer.

Buy used, V6.

These 4Rs are supposed to run for a very long time from what I've read on teh internets. They say 100,000 miles is just braking them in. So why not buy a used one and save like $10,000? Spend the saved money on upgrades for the truck.
