switching to diesel?

How much trouble is it to replace the 5vze with a hilux? Where would I find a hilux motor? My mechaninc in northern california said that if I switched it, it wouldn't pass smog. Thanks

Just get a 4 banger, it gets about the same mpg. The toyota 3.0TD isnt that great of a motor

The newish 1KD-FTV 3.0 lump isn't great for reliability. To quote TonyN from our UK Surf forum:

Its still a nice motor, every motor in the world has 'an issue' about something, and Toyota are replacing motors FOC for most peopole that have an injector related engine failure.

The problem is the copper washer under the injector leaking, it needs to be replaced with a alloy one, its far less hassle than changing a head on a Surf!
