Synthetic Engine Oil

What do you guys think about synthetic blend oils? I bought a 5 quart of Castrol Syntec 5W-30 at Walmart yesterday for about $15 and had planned on using that. My 4runner is an 06 with about 10K miles on it. Is this a good oil to use from now on??

I break in my vehicles with regular oil for approx 10K-20K miles and then switch to Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

I've never had an oil related problem in any engine and I change the synthetic oils every 7500 miles with a new oil filter, usually Purolator Pure One.

I change the dino oils at 5000 miles with a new filter.

With my new 4Runner V8, I'll change the factory oils at 2500 miles and again at 7500 miles and at 12,500 miles with regular dino oil and then change over to Mobil 1 synthetic.

Mobil 1 rocks!

Oil changes... update:

I read on the oil forum www.bobistheoilguy.com that Pennzoil Platinum is on sale till the 27th, buy one get one free at Advanced Auto.

The research I read was that the new stock of the Pennzoil Platinum is FULL synthetic and supposedly excellent oil.

I picked up enough oil for three changes in both my 4Runner V8 (5W-30) and in my Toyota 4 x 4 pickup (10W-30) for a fraction of the cost of Mobil 1.

Well, after all I've read before and including this thread's wealth of information, I have to come down opinion-wise on the side of the use of synthetics. The better the oil, the better the maintenance.

Granted, it really don't matter to your pocket book if you're planning on trading frequently anyway, but that's like saying that since your company requires you to move frequently, there's no point in doing preventive maintenance on your house.

Vehicles are complicated pieces of engineering. As savvy discriminating consumers, we choose the best we can afford and because of that we love our machines. Sure, we use them and abuse them in the use for which they were intended, but we don't neglect them.

I guess the point I'm dancing with is that one is not only the owner, but also the custodian. We live in complex technological matrices, not barefoot agrarian nature walks. As part of our pact with our tribal matrix, we purchase, inheret or acquire the control, benefits of ownership, and responsibility for objects that are the quantatative result of thousands of man hours of labor of our fellow tribesmen, to keep for such time as they are needed by us, and then pass the remaining value on for others to enjoy.

Though we may not dwell on it much, when trading time or selling time comes that extra money spent on preventive maintenance, realized or not, is still in the vehicle.

Thankfully, due to the availability of synthetics, my life's schedule doesn't revolve around 3,000 or even 5,000 mile oil changes. I want the longest safety factor built into the oil I'm using. That way, I can think about oil changes with the passing of the seasons, instead of the accumulated milage.

Twice a year, Spring and Fall is my schedule, needed or not.

Wow, you stated things so beautifully until the last paragraph and sentence. I have to disagree with what you wrote.

You're on to something there.

I change the synthetic oil in my Toyota 4 x 4 pickup in the springtime, around May, before the heat of the summer hits. And change the oil again in November right before the cold winter begins.

Both times are usually max 7500 miles, usually less and it's a done deal.

I'm going to do the same for my 4Runner V8 Sport. ;):

Well, it works if you only drive this much. However, with more miles, you cannot rely on this twice a year oil changes. I think that the best method is based on ACTUAL MILES DRIVEN.

Of course, this works perfectly for me as I don't drive more than 15K miles a year.

If I did, I'd change it more often.

;):

Same here. Over the past 3 years my total accumulated milage was ~15,000. So bi-annual is perfect for me. Perhaps a little overkill.

But, my emphasis was on the added insurance provided by using synthetics. If for some reason I should use the vehicle more, there's the added protection of an oil that doesn't break down. Hence, the lack of concern over miles driven.

That's exactly how I see it. ;):

Right now, I've got the pickup parked outside in the driveway as the 4Runner is inside, nice and comfortable.

I'd have the Toy 4 x 4 inside as well but there are lots of power tools and construction supplies in the garage taking up the second bay (and more).

In the hot summer, synthetics based on my experience of ten years keeps the engine lubricated well and 'cooler' in the scorching heat of the summer and the long pulls up the 11,000 ft passes of Colorado.

In the winter, the startup of a really cold engine parked outside in below zero temps gives me a good feeling about using synthetics.

It's funny but when I read about folks changing their synthetic oil at 3000 miles when they only drive it 'easy' in moderate temps, I personally think it's a waste of resources, time, and money.

The modern oils, and especially synthetics are built for hard use!

I see the big rigs and apparatus that I sell with only regularly scheduled oil changes, nothing out of the ordinary and they run great all day and night long.

I think the whole 'mystic' of 3000 mile oil changes and anything less than 7500 miles with a top quality synthetic is pure marketing b.s.

Thanks! I agree with you. ... Anyone trying to fixate on the milage numbers is trying to apply digital logic to an analogue world. The whole purpose of the oil change is to forestall wear on the engine. Dino oil can do that, but not as reliably and not for as long as synthetic oil. IMHO, it is the broken down oil that gets in the way of good lubrication. Since dino oil is easier to break down, I don't use it. Simple as that.

The thing I've always noticed in the cars that I've had, when switching to synthetic, is the engine seems quieter and smoother, even in the lexus ls400. I put synthetic in the rear differential about 2k miles ago, and noticed a nice difference right away, and the old stuff only had 7k on it, looked new still, but wasn't synthetic.

Amsoil 0w-30 once a year (up to 35K miles). Do an UOA and you will see it's no problem, at all! You can not get a better oil for extended change intervals.

I'm sold...
Are you using Amsoil series 2000 0W-30? Its about 2 bucks a quart more than M1, but that change interval is awesome.

just get a UOA , say, after 10k. at least that's what i did and planning to do.
so, i have the sample ready, just need to find time to drop it to ups.
and wait and see.
