synthetic oil

I just got a 1998 4runner with 127,000 and was thinking next oil change, to put synthetic oil. Is it alright to do that to these engines? And what brand should I put? Mobil 1 has a good reputation. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Use any oil. This engine is not picky (I guess you have the V6). Mobil 1, Mobil 1 High Mileage, and even Mobil Super has been used by other forum members with no complaints.

I use Mobil Super HM with a Mobil Extended oil filter and change every 5k. It's a mix of synthetic and dyno. Oil comes out cleaner than regular dyno. No problems here.

so far I've had it for a month, and I love it. It's not a 4x4, and the reason I didn't get one, is because I don't have time to go off roading. I barely have time to drive my other baby. Always working.

You can use any oil you like. I usually stick with Mobil 1 EP or Castrol Edge.

I stock up on Mobil 1 whenever Costco has a sale. No issues so far.

Not only is is "alright" but IMO should be required by the manufacturer.
ANY 100% synthetic will be better than any petroleum oil.

In general the two highest rated Synthetics are Amsoil and Redline.
I use Amsoil and have been since 1977.

Although nothing wrong with the Mobil 1 as long as you get the one that is actually 100% synthetic.

Usually the rule of thumb is....... If it came with synthetic you cannot go to conventional. If it came with conventional, you CAN go synthetic if you like.

I know quote a bit about motor oil and I disagree with the previous posts. Synthetic oil is definitely superior to conventional but mainly for conditions and use cases that 4Runners simply dnt see. in terms of heat protection and resistance to breakdown it's better. The reality is that an engine that is not stressed or high strung such as the the 3.4 does not benefit at all from synthetic with the exception of longer change intervals. I'm this application conventional is good for about 5k/6mo, while syn is good for double. I only use castrol gtx in the 4Runner. I'm sure the motor will outlive the rest of the car.

For comparison I only use M1 full synthetic in my M3 race car which spends most of its life between 5000-7500 rpm and still going strong at 170k, its a different use case all together and a stressed hot running motor to begin with.
