Synthetic or conventional oil?

i've initially grabbed a 5 qt. jug of Super Tech full synthetic at Walmart. I think it was about $15. This site link gives Super Tech a green light, so I guess it is a good choice option. Still haven't decided to go synthetic or not.

For the 4Runner, I use a good quality, name brand, conventional oil and a Toyota filter, every 5k. I don't burn a drop, it's not overly-dark when I drain it, and at 200k miles, I think it's doing the job well.

I use full synthetic in my Miata because it's the factory fill, only gets changed once a year, and sits quite a lot. I used the SuperTech from Walmart this year as it tests well and I thought I might do an extra change this year. but usually it's Mobil 1.

There is only one entry for Toyota oil and it’s the conventional 5W30 tested in 2012. They don’t have data for the newer Toyota 0W20 (like for 5th gens).
They seem to put more effort into testing off-brand crap oils to dissuade the public from using them.

Get on the mobil1 rebate. You can even stack with other discounts.

Ex: 6 quarts at costco for $38 - $10 (costco sale) - $12 (mobil1 rebate) = $16.

Stock up when there are sales, then you hardly have a reason not to run top notch, full synthetic motor oil.

I bought mobile one from Costco on sale for $ 10.00 off = $27.69 but when I went to Mobile One's website you have to buy the oil from participating retailers and Costco is not listed as being one.

You can still submit it. It's the same for Walmart. Never had a problem with M1 accepting it.

I change my own oil, it's not worth driving to have it done and I've had far too many drain plugs messed up by service shops, includin dealers.

I used to run mobil 1 but was unhappy when they lost the LLO1 certification required for BMW. This caused me to start researching quite a bit. M1 has become the low end of synth oil, not worth buying imo. I will admit that the quart bottles make fantastic funnels for oil filling.

At this point I'm a fan of castrol edge or even the magnatec full synthetics. I buy 5 quart jugs as I can easily recycle used oil in them and amazon ships them.

Final point here - Synthetic oil lasts longer. It breaks down at a much slower rate than regular. An engine with proper syth oil changes looks amazing inside. It provides improved tolerance in the case that you've had extreme heat or cold and will often keep surfaces coated a bit better. If you happen to go 1k over on your change interval with synthetics, you'll be better off than doing the same with conventional. The idea that 'toys run clean so you don't need synthetic' is a bit myopic. Yes synth will ash at a higher temp than conventional, but there are many more benefits than just the higher flash point!

My 4runner V6 has always run on conventional oil. It has 200k miles on it. Synthetics have come way down in price. I'm wondering if i should make the switch to high mileage synthetic.

I just switched my 07 4runner to mobil1 and added a bottle of AT205 to the oil. It softens the seals to stop leaks. My engine has no leaks presently, so time will tell

you forgot to mention the head gasket issues synthetic oil will cause because it's "super slick"!! & dont forget to tell everyone how you use 10/40 in an engine that calls for 5/30! LOL!

so, i now have 215k miles, now using synthetic, no leaks.

Where is the evidence to back up your claim? Provide some other than your empirical or a Scotty Kilmer youtube video, because the latter pretty much says switch to synthetic.

Going back to conventional and the oil drips are down to 1 drip a week, and the garage is clean. The synthetic didn’t work in my 2005 4runner. :drum:

When you lose an engine because of that cheap synthetic, good luck getting Mobil 1 to reimburse you.

Stuff makes an older engine too loud and clunky sounding compared to conventional. Way overrated. Rip off!

Again, empirical evidence and going to Kilmer. I bet that Kilmer would go for synthetic in the 1GR, or pretty much any automotive engine this side of 1950 AD (piston engine aircraft engines are a different story for leaded fuel reasons).
