Synthetic or conventional oil?

Again, empirical evidence and going to Kilmer. I bet that Kilmer would go for synthetic in the 1GR, or pretty much any automotive engine this side of 1950 AD (piston engine aircraft engines are a different story for leaded fuel reasons).

Are you a troll, a bot or just baked out of your mind? :hippie:

all the above... & he's drunk by 10am!

Older cars usually have to use conventional motor oil instead of synthetic motor oil. Switching to synthetic can cause engine leaks or engine damage.

Can you read?

Scotty Kilmer synthetic V conventional

scotty kilmer synthetics in old cars - Bing video

do you believe everything you read on the internet? wait, nevermind, its clear you do based on your delusional posts. & you keep posting that stupid SK video about synthetic oil... did you even watch it? HE USES SYNTHETIC OIL IN THE 200K+ MILE TOYOTA!

the question is can YOU read... how about replying to my request to back up the insane comments youve posted lately??? been waiting 3 weeks for you to tell us how synthetic oil will cause head gasket issues! or why you use 10/40 oil but still have "1 drop a week"! or how water pumps only last 4 years! these are just your comments in the last couple weeks... can only imagine the incorrect crap youve posted prior to that!

either back up your claims or just stop posting this utter nonsense!

You should shut up and get lost. Take the ranting trolls with you.:cheer2:

BTW SK uses conventional oil in the Toyota in the video and it has over 220,000 miles.

Not worth getting really involved in this, but I would like to see if there is any case study on the synthetic oil head gasket leak.

Going back to conventional and the oil drips are down to 1 drip a week, and the garage is clean. The synthetic didn’t work in my 2005 4runner.
That's perfectly fine that you don't like using synthetic oil. I think most center for debate here is about your claims that synthetic oil will certainly cause engine oil leaks and damage, still without really any metrics. All of your links are essentially providing empirical data, as triethylborane mentioned. All I've heard from you is how "slippery" the synthetic oil is vs conventional, and this qualitative evaluation isn't really a comparable metric.

What do you own triethylborane?

Do your own research.
Something tells me the dude named after rocket fuel has probably done a tad bit of research. Most people are asking you about where your research is coming from, since claims like the head gasket leaks due to synthetic oil are a bit extravagant. I'd like to see at least one example of this before I can start to consider it as a potential failure mode.

Are you even a mechanic?

from your article: "When using the term older to refer to cars, it means those manufactured before 1990 or so"

Came here to emphasize that the article talks about 30+ year old cars

you really need to watch that video again when youre sober or get a lobotomy!! he used the STP brand SYNTHETIC oil in that toyota!!! its NOT conventional! do you even know the difference?

why cant you address your comments i have asked like 5 times now? you made the comments, back it up mr mechanic!! actually its ok buddy, we all know you cant back up your delusional comments because you dont have a clue about oils or mechanical fundamentals.

2008 V6, 116k miles. Previous owner used dealership for oil changes, but for the last 30k miles I've done full synthetic, Mobile1 5w30 and haven't had any issue

2005 4runner 150,000 miles; I do oil changes every 5000 miles. 10W 30 conventional

When I tried synthetic a year ago I got too many oil "drips" on the garage floor. When I switched back to conventional I get 1 drip every few weeks.

Your 4runner may act differently!

more of this nonsense... you cant even keep track of the lies you post! you said you did the synthetic (actually it was semi synthetic) 2 years ago, but now its one year? & you said you used 10/40 but now its 10/30??? your engine calls for 5/30!

& theres your "super slick" head gasket comment again for all to see...LOL! still waiting for any shred of evidence from you that synthetic oil will cause head gasket issues! whats the problem captain?

I have a 2005 V6 4runner with the 4.0 and 150,000 miles. I switched oil two years ago to semisynthetic (from 12 years of conventional), but immediately developed oil leaks.

BUT... because I got oil leaks with synthetic... I drained the synthetic and switched back to dino / conventional and the oil leak slowed downed but did not entirely stop.

Now, two years later the oil leaks have totally stopped. I lay new cardboard down in the garage, and the new cardboard shows not a (new) drop in over a week.

No more synthetic oil for me.

Wait until you have a HG issue with your super slick synthetic engineered oil, then post back.

I switched back to conventional (Napa 10W 40) and the drips slowed down, but didn’t stop entirely. Now after a second oil change and 10 months later ALL the drips have stopped. I’ll stick with just conventional and change the oil every 5000 miles.

Wait! Captsolo claims syn oil causes head gasket leaks

Oh thats rich. I guess if he read it on the internet, IT MUST BE TRUE.

This has been entertaining to say the least. Normally we have reasoned opinions but with captsolo we have none of that.

Also, did anyone notice that link was to someone pimping his services. Book an appointment by clicking a link.

yep! because its "super slick"!... ive asked him literally 5+ times for even one fact or confirmed case of that happening or even just his opinion on it & he just avoids it & cant even reply, just keeps repeating the same jibberish & posting links to a SK vid that doesnt support his delusional comments at all. then he changes what he says in later posts or edits his original posts & cant keep track of them, but its all there for people to see.

hes also stated synthetic oil will cause "engine damage" & posts a link to an article that clearly says IF a 30 year old engine leaks with synthetic & the oil level gets low it could cause damage, duh, any engine low on oil can cause damage, its NOT THE OILS FAULT!

this guy is verging on insanity with the comments he makes on here, its comical & entertaining to those that know better, but its downright wrong & misleading to those that read his comments & believe that crap! i didn't take it personal until he calls me & others childish names for trying to provide him with correct info or when he brags about his $500k house for no reason, but he just keeps spewing nonsense with every post! theres always one on every forum but this guy is on a whole nother level of ignorance & stupidity!

one more time captain... please enlighten us all with your wisdom of how synthetic oil will cause head gasket issues or engine damage?? then tell us why you use 10/40 oil in an engine that calls for 5/30 but still have drips! no more links to SK vids or other lame articles... i'm asking for YOUR reasons or opinions on how & why any of that can happen. still waiting....

Just saw he posted on 4runners.com, on a thread about trans shudder on 10-22. Still talking about 10w-30 in his engine because of the "hot hot Bahamas". Guess he gave up on here:rofl::bravo:

Listen to the pros... not the idiots. Synthetic oil will cause leaks in an older engine. You want oil leaks run synthetics in a 15 year old 4runner.

:deadhorse: LOLOL!!!!! look at the "what oil do you use" poll i started just for you... there is 85+% of 4runner owners that replied with a lot higher miles than yours & they have ZERO LEAKS WITH FULL SYNTHETIC!!!!! how is that possible einstein? & still waiting for you to tell us all how synthetic oil causes head gaskets issues... what seems to be the problem captain???

the fact is that if you have an issue with aged hard or compromised gaskets synthetic can possibly cause leaks, but its due to the gasket or seal. period. & FYI, i run full synthetic in 2 of my 30+ year old GM muscle cars with old tech gaskets & seals & they dont leak! must be a divine miracle huh? 99% of these 10-15 year old toyota engines do not leak on full synthetic... why is that so difficult for you to comprehend?

have you ever considered that maybe you have an issue with your seals or gaskets? you stated yourself you still have drops with the 10/40 conv oil you use now!! why do you think that is?? have you ever even tried to locate the source of your leaks? we all know you havent because you arent capable of locating a simple leak on your engine... its probably a loose oil drain plug or bad valve cover gasket etc.... gaskets do go bad or shrink & harden from age ya know? & im sure your 2-4 mile trips over the last 15 years has something to do with that... that is the worst possible thing to do to an engine is not get to full operating temps & will contribute to sludge & moisture. ask scotty what he thinks about that!

im done trying to help you understand logic & reason, YOU are clearly the IDIOT here & must enjoy having people laugh AT you & not WITH you. thanks for entertaining us all with your comedy!

recap for those that dont want to read through all the captains nonsense:
synthetic oil will cause all 4th gen 4runners to leak.
synthetic oil will cause head gaskets issues because its "super slick"!
captain uses 10/40 in his engine that calls for 5/30 but still has drops!
captain thinks type T-IV trans fluid should be used in his WS trans because his rastafarian mechanic at the bahama dealership said so.
water pumps only last 4 years.
its perfectly normal to go through 4 starters on a 15 year old 4runner with 150k miles.
etc etc etc...

oh, & if you doubt him or scotty kilmer you are all idiots, trolls & mental cases! :lmao:

I put full synthetic 5W30 in mine. 251k miles no issues so far (it’s the V8). Had no idea that there was such a controversy for synthetics causing engine damage. Guess I should look for leaks. Haven’t noticed anything though.

204560 on the odo of my 2007 v6. Bought it with 134k on it, and switched to synthetic as soon as I got it. No leaks then, no leaks now. Using 5w30 as specified in the owners manual, zero issues.

The 2004 corolla now has 135k on it, bought it new, been running synthetic since the first oil change. No leaks.

Not old enough?

Just retired my brothers 2001 f-150, 246k on it. Still runs, he just needed more towing capacity. But it still doesn't leak and we have been putting synthetic in that for years as well, again weight specified by manual.

STILL NOT OLD ENOUGH?

The 1985 GMC flat bed we had at my last job ran on synthetic because of the heavy loads we hauled with it. And that 350 v8 didn't leak a drop either....

A 350 chevy v8 is a pretty damn old engine, I wonder why it's not leaking? Weird...
Maybe your problem has to do with the hyper drive being disabled...? Have you checked the trash compactors on the detention level? What about being frozen in carbonite? That has to be it... We find your lack of faith disturbing...

Cheap firebirdguy mis quotes everything. Probably doesn't even own a Toyota. Just sold my 42 foot Performance which I ran around the Caribbean
for 18 years catching big fish, Firebird guy probably owns a rowboat with no engines. I'm the expert not him.. Ha! Ha!

Post your biggies... big shot!

See the Heineken bottle next to the big lobster?

Dolphin weighed 71.1 pounds and was a tournament record. I gaffed the big fish for our lucky angler!

I told you I don't use synthetic oil because I get oil "drips". No drips with conventional oil. Who wants to clean up an oil mess on the garage floor all the time? Synthetic isn't necessary if you change oil every 5000 miles & you find big lobster!

My 2005 4runner purchased new is on OEM water pump and alternator. Starts up and runs like a new motor after 15 years

what?? i misquote everything??? LOL! everything i mention regarding your comments are exactly what you posted... i even put a couple of your delusional quotes on this thread & others... tell me what i misquote. you stated you still get "1 or 2 drops a week even with 10/40 conventional" its right there for all to see.

probably doesnt even own a toyota??? LOL!! ive posted pics of my 08 sport 4WD 4runner with 145k miles. & i use FULL SYNTHETIC WITH ZERO LEAKS! & I DIDNT PAY 40 GRAND FOR IT!

you are the expert??? WOW! & LOLOLOL!!! based on the crap you post that is clearly not true,,, come on mr expert, tell us about the head gasket issues from synthetic oil!! you made the statement, back it up! but its clear you cant & will just avoid & deflect it like always. your delusional comments & childish insults & bragging of what you own is getting real tiresome! i dont feel the need to brag about what i own, but i will say i own multiple musclecars & have owned over 40 of them. & i restored them all myself, that means engine work, paint work & full assembly from complete tear down, every single nut & bolt... bet you cant even build a model car! let alone figure out or understand why your 4runner leaks oil!

you post so much BS & lies you cant even keep track of them! look at the likes other members get when they reply to your nonsense with facts... how come your posts dont get any likes at all?? its pretty clear to see what others on here think of you & your insanity! nobody cares what you own, you write checks for everything you own & cant even do a simple trans fluid drain & fill, gotta pay your dealership hundreds of dollars to put T-IV in your WS trans!! how embarrassing for you! 9 out of 10 people are literally laughing out loud at you & your ridiculous posts. just give up dude, you are a joke!
