T-case and gearing ratios

New to the forum and NOT a car-guy so I've got questions. I've done some digging and have found mixed information on my questions but not a straight answer. Hoping someone can provide some direct info.

I have a 2002 3rd generation Sport model 4Runner (with 275/70R16 tires and a 3" lift).
1st question - what is the transfer case Lo4 ratio (2.85:1?, 4:1? other?)
2nd question - what is the gear ratio (4.30:1, other?)

Any help is appreciated.

Get your axle code off your VIN plate.

Your transfer case is either 2.28 or 2.57 to 1, probably 2.57.

Thanks for the guidance. I checked the door jam to find the VIN plate for the gear ratio and the only thing I found was a thin strip with the VIN # on it. Where else might the plate be?

There should be a plate on the firewall too, in the engine compartment.

Checked the firewall; no plate. Checked every door jam; they all had the thin strip with just the VIN # on it. ???

The VF1A based (chain drive) T-case low range, is 2.57:1.

According to a brochure I have from 2001, the Sport Package Included 4.10:1 axle gearing. I don't think there were any significant changes between '01 and '02, as the redesigned 4th gen '03 was just around the corner.

So I'd say you very likely have 4.10:1 axle gearing. Of course the spin test will confirm that.

Btw you should have a tag on almost all your body parts that will have the vin number on it. It is also etched into the frame in the passenger front wheel well. 01 - 02 4runners came with 4.10s and the 4.30 was done away with with the removal of the e-locker. For instance my 4runner was from factory with a 15" wheel but got the 16" wheel package. 3.93 (3.73?) where sometimes used but very rarely.

Factory gear for the multi matic Tcase is exactly as stated above. Btw there is no way to upgrade it as no one makes a gear down kit for a chain driven Tcase. You weather have to get an Inchworm lefty or a Marlin Crawler TacoBox.

Sorry to say this but that website for the gear ratio code is really misleading. I wouldn't trust it.
