T4R decision making

Hey fellas,

I'm about to get me a T4R within the next couple weeks. I've already got a few ideas of what I want to do. I have a couple questions though and might require some pics.

Although I'll probably end up gettin a 2wd I do want to get it spaced up front to level it. Would a 255/R18 A/T or M/T look goofy and small? I'm still gonna offroad a little bit, just light trail riding. It'll see 90% pavement so I'm looking for effeciency.

Secondly I am going to upgrade the stereo system and custom build a fiberglass one. I'll be coming from a FullSizeChevy so does anyone have pictures of custom systems? I'm just looking to add 2 subs in the back out of the way, nothing extreme.

Has anyone added a cold air intake (maybe w/ a throttle body spacer) and does it actually improve effeciency on these? I know it does on a FSC.

What can I expect to see mileage wise with a V6 2wd running a 255/R18 with lets say a BFG A/T? How about a 265/R18 A/T?

I am bias...but, IF you're gonna make it look "knarly" with off-road tires, then get a 4wd model!! Since you're getting a V6, the 4wd model V6 has selectable 4wd system where you can run 2wd all day long, preserving fuel economy. You probably won't notice much of a fuel economy difference between 2wd 4runner and 4wd V6 4runner (if you run 2wd 90% of the time). Do it so that people (like me) won't laugh at you with your 2wd 4runner and off-road tires!! (just kidding)

Now, if you are just looking for a SUV to setup your stereo, then yeah, buy a 2wd model. Otherwise, you may regret getting a 2wd down the road.

I have a full size chevy truck right now w/ 4x4 lift and big meats. I know 4x4's. Reason i'm getting a 2wd is mostly just a cheaper price for my budget.

Honestly I probably won't need 4wd and why spend the money on something I probably won't use? It's one mechanical system I wont have to worry about. I rebuilt my t-case in my truck and it was a pain in the ass.

Half the time people won't even notice the difference between a 2wd model and a 4wd model anyways. the cv's are pretty freaking small on 4runners anyways haha.

This isn't going to be a mall crawler just for a stereo, it'll be functional. Putting some A/T's will just give it an agressive look.

4 gen's are very capable but unless you SAS they aren't going through the really thick stuff.

for the record has anyone SAS'd a 4th gen?

Welcome and 2x4 or 4x4 is something you'll have to figure out. You could argue either case...

If you look around the forum you'll see several pics of T4R's with the front ends levelled out or small lifts and the 255/75/17 BFG M/T's originally made for the Jeep. They are very cheap and the guys who have them like them. IMHO they look freakin sweet and you can fit a 5th one in the spare tire carrier. As far as MPG goes those tires will hurt. Most guys lose 1-2mpg and most V6 guys average 18 or better stock.

Most T4R's come with 17's. The SEs, XS-Ps (a Southeast Toyo regional package) and Limiteds have the 18's. I don't know what 18's are out there in tough looking 255's.

where's a good place to pick up some of those jeep m/ts? who are they made by as well? 255/r17 sound like it would be a good combo. would 265's have the same kinda mileage reduction?

Sound like a cold air would be able to offset that issue of mileage loss. A cold air paired with exhaust would surely give me 2-3mpg back

It seems like people are getting them from Tirerack.com, Discount Tire and other large, chain retailers. I can't help you with intake and exhaust other than maybe it'll help; 2-3 sounds a bit optimistic.

Thanks for the help. 2-3 mpg increase w/ a full exhaust and intake is a pretty good guess.

One guy here has put some Doug Thorley long tubes and I think JBA has shorties for the V6. I don't think the V8 has many/any header options. The V6 is a 60 degree engine vs. the V8 at 90 degrees. There's more room.
