T4R hitch harness bad connection

Have 98 T4R and my wire harnes for tow hitch does not work. Only driving light works, stop light and signals do not work. The trailer side is fine - I checked with another car hooked up.

Its definitely on T4R side of wires. What I need to know where is the connection from hitch wires to the car and is there an adaptor somewhere in the back of car that hitch harness is connected to.

check behind your rear bumper on the left (driver side) for the hitch to truck plug. i am looking at the 2000 4runner wire harness manual. i think 98 should be the same, but then i can be wrong. =)

Thanks JustAnotherT4R, found out what the problem is. It's the converter thats mounted inside passenger side rear panel next to rear taillight. All wires going in check out OK, coming out only the driving lights work.

Anybody knows how much this converter costs from Toyota and/or any good alternatives?

I was thinking just switching to 5 wire connector and hooking it up directly (bypassing converter) and installing inline fuses on all + wires.

Any experience with that out there?

This was the first I had heard of this occurring in the 4Runners but it seems to be a recurring trouble for the LandCruiser guys.

I would refer you to the " IH8MUD" forum and search for "trailer harness" as this seems to be the same description of a troublesome converter.

Some folks have found a way to wire around the converter and others have just replaced it with a Radio Shack type of set-up.

Just got some Universal converter from 5 to 4 at local PepBoyz for $25 - will see if it works.
