Ok, I have a radio/cd & cassette player in my 97 4Runner and I have had it fixed twice. I know just want to replace it completely. Is it as easy as unplugging the old one and plugging in a new one?
Where can I buy one besides the dealer. I would like the direct replacement.

I know I see them on ebay all the time. As for replacing them, I have never done it myself, I always have the place I buy it from do it for me.

If you get a stock replacement radio, then yes installation is as simple as plugging the new one in. Of course, you will have to take apart the dash a little.

IMO, it's worth buying a new HU like a Pioneer or something. Much better sound and easily compatiable with Ipods and things of that nature.

I've got one available as well just pulled it from my 2000 limited and put in an aftermarket hu. let me know if your interested

I have done this a couple times to my 1997, its quite straight forward.

I just installed a double DIN setup last night and went in quite smoothly. If the connectors are different then the stock connector, there are usually adapters you can purchase that will do the connection for you.

If you have no adapter, you can always solder a new connector on, using the wiring legend for the radio and the wiring legend for your '97 (http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/stereodetail/2026.html).

Make sure if your going OEM on a 97 4 Runner then you don't need the Factory code. But if your going to upgrade to a newer stock Model then you'll need the Factory Code to activate the stereo.

This is not necessarily true. Most of the time, the factory codes are NOT activated. In fact, many of the radios don't even have the ability for code lockout. It is my understanding that you should only need the code if the stereo has been installed in a previous vehicle, (with codes enabled) in which case you either need the code itself, or the VIN # of the vehicle it came out of and the serial # of the stereo. A good dealer will then give you the necessary code, but others will charge a fee for the service.

Also, I just did a write-up on installing a Scion T1807 into a 3rd gen 4Runner. There are several models out there on ebay, and some can be had for pretty cheap (far less than an aftermarket unit). They look pretty stock (far lower chance of theft), but sound FAR better.

Finally, check out the Scion HU thread currently running near the top in the Audio & Electronics forum for more info on the swap.

Something to keep in mind is that due to the size of the opening of the factory dash trim bezel (6 15/16"), there are a lot of aftermarket stereos that will require trimming of the bezel to fit through the dash opening.
