I have a 2001 T4R Limited with about 70k miles on it. I'm considering trading it in for a new 2006 or 2007 model. I like to keep my vehicles stock and don't to make any modifications. The only thing I

I have not had your experience but i would say that a lift would cost about $650, but you can search for much more detail. True you would need new tires, but even if you didn't want a lift you would need new ones anyways because the tires that are standard aren't very capable IMO. You wouldnt need to buy new rims though.

The old 3rd gen 4runners had a minimum ground clearance of 9.25-9.5" (at the bottom of the rear axle pumpkin), NOT 11" (as stated in brochure). Toyota gets creative in publishing their numbers. The new 4runners have a better ATRAC (traction control) system, which should be advantages in your off-roading escapes. Therefore, i doubt that you will see a big difference in off-roading between the generations of 4runners.
But, you will see a HUGE difference in roominess and comfort on all roads between 3rd and 4th gen 4runners.

: , pumpkin) is over 9" off the ground at the lowest point. It's actually closer to 9.5". I measured it and my truck is on stock tires. The approach angle on the 4th gen might be worst than previous gen, cause of the lower front bumper.

I believe that 3rd gen and 4th gen 4runners share the same rear axle (but different width because 4th gen is wider). And with the same height stock tires (31" tires), the height of rear diff is the same.

My bad on this issue, back to eat a little crow. I should not have spouted off without knowing. I took a piece of cardboard and cut it so it would slide under my diff w/o touching, and imagine my surprise when it also slid right under an 06 at the dealer where I work a 2nd job. And yeah 9.5 is closer than 10", sorry to post incorrect and misleading info.
