Ok, after seeing this from this angle, I am starting to question my decision making process.....Wifey says I better call Bud and get some sliders on order:wow:

Sorry Bud....Look's like we didn't get any vid of that one...Maybe someone else did.

No worries, hopefully someone did.. my gopro died so I didn't get to take much. I was the guy riding up in the FJ to spot her and walked back down to get in my truck

Nice pics! I hate that I missed this!

His name is Jacob Barnes..

Awesome trip guys. Glad everyone had a good time and made it out without any damage haha. Also thanks to everyone who took pictures and videos. Keep em coming! Definately would like to wheel with you guys again.

Hey guys Great meeting everybody yesterday and awesome time wheeling with all of you! Thanks for the southern hospitality and showing me around down there we had a blast I can't wait to get down there and do it again! Especially to PD for organizing this and Austin for trail leading! I have a ton of pics of i think mostly everybody in the group.I also have a couple vids too. I have to go thru all of them but there's a lot, I will do it tomorrow for sure i'm dead tired tonight i just got back from the long ride back up to NYC...

It was good to meet everyone yesterday and see some nice rigs. I hated I had to bug out early and not hang out for the good stuff after lunch, it looks like y'all fun! Hopefully we can pull this off again in the not too distant future.

I had ya covered you had a good 1/4" of clearance! haha good stuff though that TRD pro looks sexier on the rocks!

PD you pulled my move hitting the horn there!

How embarrassing lol. Bobby had just mentioned not having heard any "accidental horns" when we were sitting on Dickey hill and I told him I never really noticed any before. After that we heard a couple. Mine happened to be caught on tape haha.

Glad that everyone had a good time. I know we all enjoyed it. Got everyone around safely and I'm sure those that got to come for the afternoon ride-alongs were not left bored. It was a LOT busier than I anticipated. Probably only the second time I've been out there when there were more Toyota's than anything else. I believe there might have been two separate Tacoma groups out there.

Got to finally use my winch to pull a Jeep, so that was fun. Yeah normally we like to keep our runs small, sort of like the afternoon group where we're all on coms and can just run through really quick, but this wasn't too bad for a large group even with all the traffic. We couldn't have asked for better weather or conditions though. Temps were comfortable, the dust was minimal, the trail was actually packed and not muddy. That was definitely the easiest I've ever climbed the Dutch John chicane climb. It wasn't "slidey" whatsoever. We'll definitely have to plan for another some time.

Here are the few I snapped on the cell. Of course on a huge run like this, both myself and Mrs. Darklight forget our DSLR's.... perfect.

Same trail head parking lot shot that everyone snapped:

Both trucks with Metaltech rear long travel FTMFW. Tires still haven't left the ground

It was really nice meeting everyone and seeing some nice looking 4Runners being put to good use. I hope everyone had a good time regardless of the hold ups on Dickey Hill.

It really sucked that I didn't have my 4Runner but I am thankful my moonroof is being replaced. I am also thankful that PD organized this run and letting us ride along. It was pretty cool being able to go and ride in someone else's built 4Runner. This was a big ride as PD mentioned we usually roll about 3-4 trucks in a group. We did pretty good though with minimal on coming traffic. As always Austin did a great job leading and helping out. It was cool bumping into Jacob out there in his first gen pick up. He had a lot of work done since over the summer.

I hope everyone made it home safe, especially Jared NYC-Runner. Definitely have to come up North one day and hit some trails with you. Looking forward to seeing some more pics and videos.
Maybe even an "accidental horn" moment too lol

Until next time

So I'm thinking I'd like to take advantage of the Toytec 10% off which ends today. I have the black 2014 trail and I am looking at the following:
BOSS Kit
Radflo Extended Travel

Then my next question is whether it is imperative to install new UCAs with these setups. If the answer is yes, which do you guys think are the best bang for the buck? I would not buy the LR ones after reading many of posts.

Lastly, what size tires would you guys recommend with this setup? I'm trying to get as much ground clearance as possible as I spend a lot of time in deep sand on the beach.

Thanks for any advice!
Brian

First off, this is my opinion based on my research and knowledge. I am not a mechanic or an engineer and this is not the gospel.

Both Radflo and Boss are good kits, several guys in the 5th gen section are running them, and I don't think you can go wrong with either. It comes down to what you want to spend, and what all you want to do with your truck. Coilovers aren't a necessity unless you just need or want the adjustability. OME makes a great kit, but there is no adjustably. If you are planning on adding armor, wenches, a lot of gear, RTT, etc that will all come into play when looking at what suspension you should get, as well as how comfortable you want the ride to be. I went with Icon because of the ride quality and adjustability. Before jumping into anything, read all you can. Don't buy a suspension based solely on getting a good deal, make sure its what you want and fits your needs. Here is a good link to start with: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/165065-5th-gen-4runner-lift-buyers-guide.html

UCA's are generally considered a necessity when you lift it over 3" because the alignment will be out of spec. In some cases they may be required depending on your suspension. For instance, I called Icon and they said UCA's are required for their long travel coilovers because the stock one's can't handle the extra downward travel, even though I wasn't planning on raising the front a full 3". If you decide to get them or not, don't go cheap. There are places you can save money, but a vital suspension component shouldn't be one of them. Icon, Total Chaos, and Camburg are all good choices and pretty popular. Again, research and find one that suits your needs. Also, if you are planning on a 3" or more lift, you may want to consider a diff drop.

As far as tire sizes, check here:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/156378-5th-gen-tire-fitment-guide.html#post1550444

I have Cooper AT3's in stock size and I've had no issues in sand on the beach. I even pulled a Buick Rendezvous out of the deeper sand at Freeman Park in Carolina beach without any trouble. Keep in mind that the bigger tires will weigh more and effect your fuel economy (any lift will too) and put more stress on your wheel bearings.

Good luck with your choices, and enjoy your runner!!
