I have an '04 SR5 V8 that I bought a year ago from the original owner with 35K miles. The secondary pump affects only 2005+ vehicles. I had the timing belt and water pump replaced by Toyota, obviously not due to miles but age. The original parts removed looked new and I could not see signs of wear or aging. Granted it has low miles but has lasted trouble free for 15 years. The V8 is very quiet and smooth. The only thing you might have a problem with is Traction control and ABS light might come on. There is a reset procedure for that listed on this forum. I've only heard great things about Toyota vehicles and would not hesitate to buy another Toyota or Lexus.
Regarding how long the engine lasts trouble-free (see below), this will most likely be the last vehicle I would NEED to buy. It's got all the cargo and passenger space I need, towing capacity, longevity. I drive only 7K miles a year so I would probably have to put this 4Runner in my will, and I'm not that old yet. Seriously.
The 2UZ-FE Engine Problems and Reliability
Toyota 4.7L 2UZ-FE Engine Specs, Reliability, Oil | Tundra, LX 470 engine
The 2UZ-FE engines are almost bulletproof, the most reliable and durable engines from the Toyota corporation. These engines do not have any design flaws, meaning lash, noise, wheezing cannot be found. The engine has a timing belt that needs the replacement every 90,000 miles. The timing belt is costly but on the other hand is a lot of extra money to repair the considerable engine disaster because of the pistons will hit the valves if the timing belt breaks. Thankfully, the cast iron block is more durable and repairable more easily.
The engine longevity depends on how well and periodically was maintenance, the quality of oil and gas, driven style and conditions. But the non-problem average mileage for cars with the 2UZ-FE is about 300,000 miles.
